Tina Fey Leaves Comedy Behind—Her Supernatural Horror Drops on Hulu Today
Ghosts, suspects, and secrets collide as A Haunting in Venice—the star-packed mystery horror from 20th Century Studios with Tina Fey and Kenneth Branagh—lands on Hulu today.
If you missed Kenneth Branagh sporting that wild Poirot mustache while solving ghostly mysteries in Venice, you’ve got a new chance to catch up, no rental needed. A Haunting in Venice—the 2023 Agatha Christie adaptation with a cast so stacked it almost distracts from the plot—just landed on Hulu as of today. It’s the third run-out for Branagh’s Hercule Poirot, except this time he’s tangling with the supernatural. Or at least, that's what the marketing hints at—let’s be honest, it’s an Agatha Christie story, so expect twists, not straight-up ghosts.
What’s the Setup?
This time, Poirot’s living that grumpy, retired life in post-WWII Venice, presumably eating pasta and ignoring most people. Of course, someone ropes him into attending a séance at a haunted old palazzo. Things go sideways pretty fast when a guest turns up dead (shocking, I know) and Poirot’s retirement plans get shelved for another round of murder-mystery action.
The Cast: Seriously, Everyone’s Here
- Kenneth Branagh – Poirot himself, returning as both star and director
- Tina Fey – yes, from 30 Rock, playing an author buddy of Poirot’s
- Michelle Yeoh – showing up as the medium running the séance (a great casting choice, let’s be real)
- Jamie Dornan – probably not dancing this time around, but earnest as ever
- Kelly Reilly, Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Jude Hill, Ali Khan, Emma Laird, Riccardo Scamarico – the rest of the party guests and suspects
If you ever wanted to see Tina Fey trade banter with Poirot in a haunted house, this is your shot.
Behind the Scenes
Branagh directed again, with Michael Green adapting Christie’s 1969 novel Hallowe'en Party. On the production end, you’ve got Ridley Scott, Simon Kinberg, Louise Killin, James Prichard, Mark Gordon as executive producers, and Judy Hofflund as the main producer. So, yes, most of Hollywood’s power-players found a way to get their name on this.
'Set in eerie, post-World War II Venice on All Hallows' Eve, the film is a terrifying mystery featuring the return of the celebrated sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the world's most glamorous city, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.'
Reception: Not a Box Office Juggernaut, But Still Fresh
Fun fact: even with all the A-list talent, A Haunting in Venice is actually the lowest-grossing entry so far in Branagh’s Christie trilogy, pulling in just over $122 million globally. (The earlier films, Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, did better numbers, for context.) But if you care about reviews more than box office receipts, it’s Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 76% score from almost 300 critics—solid, even if not earth-shattering.
If all you want is mysterious murders, lavish costumes, rain-soaked Venetian canals, and Tina Fey playing it straight for once, A Haunting in Venice is absolutely worth streaming now that it’s on Hulu.
