The Witness ending explained: what happens to André and Alex in the final episode
Spoilers for all three episodes of The Witness (Netflix, 2026).
The Witness is a three-part Netflix drama based on the true story of the 1992 murder of Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common. Rachel was stabbed 49 times in broad daylight. Her two-year-old son Alex was found beside her body, calling for her to wake up. The series follows Rachel's partner André Hanscombe and their son Alex across the decades that followed.
The reinvestigation
The final episode jumps forward to 2005. A new police team reopens the case and focuses on Robert Napper, who has been detained at Broadmoor Hospital since 1995 for separate murders and sexual assaults. The original investigation had wrongly fixated on Colin Stagg, an innocent man who was entrapped through a controversial undercover operation.
The reinvestigation team painstakingly builds the forensic case against Napper — matching shoe prints, DNA evidence, and cross-referencing witness records. Despite setbacks (a hair sample that could be destroyed by testing, hospital bureaucracy), they secure enough evidence. Napper is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment at Broadmoor.
André and Alex's reconciliation
The emotional core of the finale isn't the conviction — it's the relationship between father and son. André raised Alex in near-isolation, moving them from London to France and then Spain to escape media attention. His overprotective parenting created years of resentment. As a teenager, Alex rebelled, pushed his father away, and told him he didn't respect him.
After Napper's conviction, Alex meets with one of Napper's former therapists and learns about Napper's childhood abuse and mental health history. This gives Alex a painful new perspective: he could have ended up like Napper if André hadn't shielded him so fiercely.
Alex returns to his father and delivers the line the entire series has been building towards: he tells André he once said he didn't respect him, and he meant it — but he doesn't feel that way anymore. He has nothing but respect for what André did.
André then shows Alex an anonymously delivered dossier revealing that police had received multiple reports and warnings about Napper before Rachel's murder — and failed to act. The two decide to pursue legal action against the Metropolitan Police together.
The episode closes with Alex narrating that Napper didn't let him live — love did. The final image is real archival footage of the young Alex, André, and Rachel playing together.
