Here we go again: fresh whispers say George R. R. Martin has finally finished The Winds of Winter—stoking new hope that fantasy’s longest wait is almost over.

Alright, here we go again: Winds of Winter rumors are swirling, and, yes, things are officially bonkers on the Game of Thrones internet. Fans of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire have been waiting for book six, The Winds of Winter, since 2011—a completely absurd stretch, if we’re counting. Meanwhile, HBO’s churned out a whole mega-series, ended it (clumsily, honestly), and rolled up two separate prequels (House of the Dragon is coming back, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms just wrapped). But book readers? Still twiddling their thumbs and doomscrolling author updates. Now, the hype machine is going wild after a supposed 'leak' from, of all places, 4chan. I know, red flag.

What’s This 4chan Leak Actually Say?

According to someone claiming to be a production assistant at Bantam Spectra (Martin’s longtime publisher), GRRM finished The Winds of Winter in December 2025 and turned in the full manuscript in January 2026. The poster says Martin’s online silence lately has been a calculated move for marketing. Apparently, the book’s been in editing and layout since February, but the 'official' announcement is under wraps until Comic-Con this July. The anonymous source says, with spectacular bluntness:

'We know he’s going to announce it on his blog first because he doesn’t give a f***, with the actual release window being around fall. They want those holiday sales. The book is long, like long long, think AFFC and ADWD in one book... about 1600 manuscript pages. People will not be disappointed on that front.'

This person claims the marketing team has a campaign lined up, apparently involving HBO in some mysterious cross-promotion—not surprising, but also not exactly revelatory.

  • Draft finished by Martin in December 2025, handed in January 2026
  • Editing/layout started February 2026
  • Publishers sitting on an official announcement for Comic-Con in July
  • Martin allegedly will spill the beans on his own blog first
  • Book is gigantic—supposedly as long as A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons combined (ballpark: 1,600 manuscript pages)
  • Release planned for the fall ('holiday sales' window)
  • 'Jon is back'—which, frankly, you already know if you survived past season 5 of the show
  • HBO possibly lining up tie-in content

Should We Believe Any of This?

Here’s where things get interesting (or, you know, typically messy):

The 4chan post is completely anonymous, so there’s zero evidence this isn’t just some random person having a very productive lunch break. The poster won’t post any documentation 'because i actually want to keep my f***ing job,' which, sure, is what every definitely-real leaker says. Also, for someone who allegedly works in publishing, their grammar isn’t exactly polished, if you catch my drift.

Some observations:

Martin hasn’t truly gone dark on his blog; he updated as recently as February, chatting about the Game of Thrones stage play. The claim that Winds will be as long as AFFC and ADWD combined is also kind of funny. Martin originally tried to publish those books together but was forced to split them up for being too massive. It’d be a real turnaround if the publisher decided suddenly that 'gargantuan' is a selling point. (Maybe 'doorstopper' season is in?)

One small thing: the leaker notes 'Jon is back.' Book Jon ended five deaths ago, so, yes, obviously he’s coming back. We all saw the show—hell, it’s hard to avoid that twist even if you’re just browsing memes.

Fan Hope vs Cold Reality

At this point, fans have weathered so many fake-outs that even the enthusiasm is laced with suspicion. Comment sections are split between people laughing the post off, people getting their hearts trampled all over again, and people openly admitting they stopped caring sometime during the Obama administration.

Martin himself hasn’t been especially hopeful in recent years. His last notable comment (late 2025) was classic GRRM—vague, self-deprecating, and mixed with new distractions:

'I have to write more Dunk and Egg. There’s supposed to be another Fire and Blood book, too. I do think if I can just get some of these other things off my back, I could finish The Winds of Winter pretty soon... It’s been made clear to me that Winds is the priority, but … I don’t know. Sometimes I’m not in the mood for that... I’m so far behind on everything.'

In summary: if you hear hoofbeats, don’t assume unicorns, especially on 4chan. But, just maybe, keep an eye on Comic-Con. Hope is the thing with feathers, but nobody said it wasn’t also annoyed and deeply skeptical at this point.
