Prime Video is turning Jack Carr’s Savage Son into the next chapter for The Terminal List, with Chris Pratt back as James Reece — but in what form?

Took them long enough, but The Terminal List is officially sticking around on Amazon Prime Video — and not just in a meandering "maybe we will, maybe we won't" sort of way. Despite the four-year gap between the first run and its second season (if you overlook the Dark Wolf prequel), the show's comeback drew in enough viewers for Amazon to greenlight more. The next project on the table: an adaptation of Savage Son, the third Jack Carr novel.

Savage Son is already confirmed as the basis for the next series entry, even though some outlets are calling it a spin-off.

Amazon's messaging: confusing at best

The news broke through The Hollywood Reporter, and to be honest, their wording left me scratching my head. It almost sounded like they were pitching Savage Son as a standalone project or spin-off — similar to what they did with Dark Wolf, that season one prequel focused on Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch's antihero-turned-villain). But then they mention Chris Pratt suiting up again as James Reece, which realistically would just make this a normal third season. If you’ve followed Carr’s books, you’ll know Savage Son is the third in the line-up, after The Terminal List and True Believer (which fuelled season two).

So is it a spin-off or Season 3?

Judging by the details, most signs point to this being a straightforward continuation — series three, basically. The book sees Reece tangling with the Russian mob and ending up in a Most Dangerous Game scenario on a remote island (so, expect your usual dose of hyper-violent cat-and-mouse). If the adaptation follows the novel, Tom Hopper's Raife Hastings should be back in the mix. There’s also a good chance we’ll see Constance Wu return as Katie Buranek, though she’s got her hands full on another series — HBO Max just gave the nod to a limited Crazy Rich Asians follow-up starring her.

  • Amazon's ordered Savage Son hot on the heels of Season 2's debut, just two weeks after its premiere.
  • No showrunner has been announced for this new chapter — there could be some behind-the-scenes reshuffling or they simply haven’t pinned anyone down yet.
  • The wording around "spin-off" vs. "third season" is muddy; odds are the Hollywood Reporter team probably aren’t deep in the Carr fandom.

All that said, this franchise has legs at Prime Video — Carr's got seven James Reece books lined up, so there's plenty on the horizon if the audience keeps showing up.
