The Rookie Season 8 Finale Cliffhanger Puts a Fan Favorite’s Fate on the Line
The Rookie’s Season 8 finale puts a founding character on the brink, igniting Season 9 exit buzz. Showrunner Alexi Hawley weighs in on roster shake-up rumors and the fate of Richard T. Jones’ Wade Grey.
If you watched The Rookie's Season 8 finale and started panicking about losing one of the OGs, you're not alone. The episode left a certain fan favorite's future hanging by a thread, and naturally, the rumor mill went into overdrive. So let's set the record straight about what's actually going on with Wade Grey and the show's main cast as we look ahead to Season 9.
What Happens to Wade Grey After That Finale?
First off, Richard T. Jones isn’t going anywhere. Yep, he'll still be playing Wade Grey when The Rookie is back for Season 9. That’s straight from showrunner Alexi Hawley, who told Deadline there are no major cast shake-ups planned as of now. So even though the finale left Grey at a professional crossroads, don’t start a farewell montage just yet.
To catch you up: throughout Season 8, Grey was busy with Garza's task force — chasing down all kinds of criminal drama, mainly focused on the now-dead villain Monica Stevens (RIP to one of the more memorable bad guys they've thrown at us recently). With Monica out of the picture (thanks to an assassin in the second-to-last episode), Grey’s gig is suddenly up in the air, especially with Tim Bradford stepping into the Watch Commander role.
What Does the Showrunner Say?
Here’s what Hawley said about Grey’s uncertain future, which basically translates to: 'We have no clue yet, but it’ll be interesting'. In his own words:
'I do think part of early writers room for Season 9 is going to be figuring out exactly what Grey's next chapter is... I don't think going backwards is necessarily the way to go, but I also want it to be satisfying and dramatic. As long as we treat it as an opportunity, I think we'll figure out something fun to do, for sure.'
So that’s about as non-committal as TV answers get, but at least it means there’s something significant in store for Grey, not just bench-warming.
Hawley also wanted to squash the exit rumors completely, saying:
'No, we're status quo. We like everybody, we're making it work.' He called Jones 'a hugely important piece of the puzzle of our show.'
A Quick Recap: Where Season 8 Left Us
- Wade Grey wraps up a season in the middle of a task force storyline, worrying about his next move with his main case (Monica Stevens) now resolved — permanently.
- Tim Bradford (who, by the way, now has Watch Commander on his resume) proposes to Lucy Chen. She says yes, but then — of course — both get kidnapped right after. Classic Rookie move, right?
- Grey had kindly offered to cover Tim’s post during his wedding prep, but that didn’t exactly protect anyone from getting thrown in a van.
Will The Rookie Ever Kill Off a Main Character?
Never say never, apparently, but don’t hold your breath. Hawley says there are zero plans for a shocking, character-eliminating twist in the immediate future: 'There's no plan to do anything crazy right now, but never say never.' Good news if you’re emotionally attached to this ensemble — and honestly, who isn’t by now?
Where and When Do We Go From Here?
ABC has officially renewed The Rookie for a ninth season, so the show isn’t going into early retirement. As for when Season 9 is actually dropping, pencil in early 2027 (yep, it seems TV is planning way ahead these days).
Tying it all together: No main actors are jumping ship, but Wade Grey’s career arc may finally get some fresh attention next season. If you feel like the finale left you in suspense, congratulations — that's exactly where the writers want you.
