The Rookie nearly went with a different Chenford ending amid Season 9 cancellation fears
Eric Winter said they even shot a contingency ending for Season 8 — but he’s keeping the exact Chenford outcome to himself.
You know how American network shows love to keep us guessing, especially with those never-ending cliffhangers at the end of each series? Turns out, The Rookie nearly went down a completely different path with its Season 8 finale — and we were never supposed to find out about it.
Eric Winter, who"s been playing Sgt. Tim Bradford since the beginning, let slip at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that the cast and crew actually shot an alternate ending for Season 8. Why? Because they genuinely didn"t know if ABC would give them a nod for Season 9 or send them packing. ABC didn"t announce the renewal until April, so everyone involved, from the actors to the production staff, had to hedge their bets.
Winter explained at Comic-Con, 'We didn"t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back. We even shot an alternate ending to the show.'
Spoiler-phobic secrecy and that Season 8 cliffhanger
Before you ask — no, Winter wouldn"t give away a syllable about what was in that unseen alternate ending. Apparently, it would have been 'different', but he wouldn"t go any further, warning that explaining any more would be a 'spoiler'. I"ve seen MI5 interrogations with more detail. The point is, it was there in case ABC decided to pull the plug.
The finale as broadcast in May left viewers with Tim popping the big question to Lucy (played by Melissa O"Neil). Naturally, because it"s The Rookie, the happy engagement moment was swiftly followed by both of them being abducted — so, you know, tune in next season.
Showrunner Alexi Hawley, ever the tease, said previously that the Season 8 cliffhanger had 'real stakes' for Chenford (that"s Tim and Lucy, if you"re not fluent in ship names).
Melissa O"Neil, speaking at the same Comic-Con panel, made a point of crediting the show"s fans for keeping The Rookie alive for another run, saying their support made all the difference. Eric Winter echoed her excitement, calling the chance to return for another season with the rest of the cast 'an exciting time'.
The Rookie Season 9 is set for January 2027 on ABC.
