Scary Movie 6 skips the Melissa Barrera cameo Scream fans were banking on — and now one of the film’s stars is finally explaining why the buzzy moment never happened.

Right, let's clear something up about Scary Movie 6—the cameo you were probably hoping for, especially if you're one of the Scream lot, simply didn't happen. Yes, I'm talking about Melissa Barrera. If you went in expecting a quick wink-and-you-miss-it from her, here's why you left the cinema a bit disappointed.

Why No Melissa Barrera in Scary Movie 6?

Melissa Barrera—mainstay of the Scream revival since 2022 and the intended lead of the now-infamous Scream 7—was actually up for a spot in Scary Movie 6. She did want to be in it, and has said outright in interviews:

"I always loved those movies... When I saw it announced, I was like, 'Oh, that would be fun. That would be so fun to do.'"

The problem? No one in charge of Scary Movie 6 even realised she was available. Blame Spyglass Media Pictures for this bit of film industry weirdness—she was let go from Scream 7 back in 2024, due to her political statements on social media, which caused the studio to boot her out. After that, she went public about being keen for a new horror-comedy gig, but it seems the message didn't get through.

Marlon Wayans Had No Idea

Marlon Wayans—star and comedy architect of the Scary Movie series—was completely in the dark about all this. When Variety quizzed him directly about the missing Barrera cameo, his honest reaction was:

"Now you tell me! I wish I'd heard about that."

As far as Wayans is concerned, it would've been ideal. In his own words:

"That would have been a lot of fun. I definitely would've tried to make that work. That would've been a masterful cameo."

So it really came down to nobody making the connection at the right time. More classic Hollywood communication breakdown than any actual resistance.

Doors Not Completely Closed

If you're holding out for a future cameo, there's hope yet. Wayans left the door wide open for Barrera to get involved in the next one. He said plainly:

"Maybe for Part 7!"

What's Next?

  • Marlon Wayans has already teased a Scary Movie 7, saying they're planning to spoof the likes of Backrooms (that YouTube horror megahit) and something called Obsession. Exactly what 'Obsession' is, your guess is as good as mine, but the trend seems to be sticking with whatever's buzzy online or in recent thrillers.

Scary Movie 6 is in cinemas now.
