Julie Plec, the force behind The Vampire Diaries, has a Prime Video drama likened to Whiplash with a twist — and it’s scored a very welcome update.

Here we go—Julie Plec, the brains behind The Vampire Diaries and We Were Liars, has another TV drama lined up. This time, she’s swapping haunted towns and secretive islands for something even more cutthroat: junior tennis. I know, sounds a bit left field, but there’s already a strong pedigree involved, and it’s headed to Prime Video. Here’s what’s actually going on.

Tennis, But Not As You Know It

The new show is called Rally, and the whole thing’s set in this high-pressure world of a top-tier tennis academy. Think less about underdog sports montages and more about what happens when ambition starts burning holes right through friendships and families. The focus isn't just on winning trophies. It's all about what these young hopefuls are sacrificing—and frankly, what (and who) gets trampled along the way.

The concept comes straight out of real life. Guymon Casady from Entertainment 360 dreamt the whole thing up after witnessing his own children being put through the wringer at IMG Academy, which is basically Hogwarts for tennis prodigies, if the sorting hat handed out blisters and sponsors.

The idea for Rally came from a deeply personal place – watching my kids train and navigate the intense pressure, dedication, and heartbreak of elite junior tennis at the IMG Academy. To build this world alongside a master storyteller like Julie Plec, and to ground it in the unmatched, authentic perspective of a true legend like Andre Agassi, is a remarkable privilege.

Prime Video have greenlit Rally for series, so it’s actually happening—this isn’t just speculation. The show’s being made via Universal Television, Entertainment 360, and Amazon MGM Studios, with Plec writing, showrunning, and executive producing. That makes this her second active show at Prime Video alongside We Were Liars.

Trophy Cabinet on the Call Sheet

  • Andre Agassi, eight-time Grand Slam singles champion, is executive producing the series—his very first go at producing scripted TV.
  • He’ll be joined behind the scenes by Justin Gimelstob, another ex-pro (and Agassi’s current business partner).

Agassi isn’t just lending his name; he and Gimelstob will be actively shaping the drama with their own firsthand experience—think state-of-the-art authenticity when it comes to the on-court scenes and what actually goes down at this level. Agassi’s words on the matter:

I am eager for Justin and I to lend our experiences to help the incredible Rally team.

So far, there’s no news on when Rally actually lands or who’s starring. For anyone keeping track, Plec’s other Prime Video hit We Were Liars is also getting a second season soon, so her footprint there is only expanding.

Rally is officially ordered to series at Prime Video, with tennis legend Agassi signed on as executive producer for the first time.
