The cast have now dropped a pretty chunky update on Season 5, and for those following this cult fantasy adaptation, it sounds as though the end is in sight – but not quite as close as some might hope.
Season 5: Already Well Underway
Sam Riegel, who not only voices Scanlan but is one of the key faces of Critical Role in general, chatted with Collider and let slip that Season 5 isn’t just in the works – they’re already past the halfway mark on production. And trust me, his enthusiasm is as clear as ever.
'Season 5, we’re more than halfway done with it. It’s real good. But this season is great. Forget about Season 5! Just focus on the present. Season 5 is going to be amazing.'
So the translation there: don’t get too ahead of yourself, but yes, the finish line is vaguely in sight and apparently, they're feeling pretty chuffed about the results so far.
Don't Hold Your Breath Just Yet
But if you’re keen on rapid turnarounds, brace yourself – you’re in for a bit of a wait. Riegel laid out the reality: several more months just to complete actual production, and then tack on a whole block of time for internationalisation. That means all the translation, plus dubbing the thing into various languages, which always takes longer than you'd think.
His breakdown essentially went like this:
- A few more months to actually finish the production itself
- Then a long stretch spent on translations and dubbing for the global release
Bottom line: it’s not dropping anytime soon, but at least it sounds like everything’s going smoothly.
Season 5 Could Still Go Sideways (Apparently)
In typical style, Travis Willingham – another founding voice and the show’s occasional prankster – couldn’t resist winding up the fans a bit more. He joked that this halfway point could quickly be thrown out the window, depending on how series four lands with the audience.
'And what he means by halfway done is that, depending on how people react to the last episode of Season 4, we might be like, "Eh, scrap that whole thing and just start over again",' Willingham joked, before clarifying, 'That’s not true.'
Classic bit of cast banter, but useful to remember – until it’s locked, nothing in animation is sacred. Still, by the sounds of it, Season 5 is very much alive and making steady progress.
