The Boys: what happened to Maeve? Her exit and where she is now
Queen Maeve — played by Dominique McElligott — was one of The Boys' central characters for three seasons. Then she vanished.
She didn't appear in season 4, didn't return for the series finale in season 5, and her absence became one of the show's most-discussed loose threads.
Here's exactly what happened to her, why she never came back, and what showrunner Eric Kripke has said about it.
How Maeve left the show
Maeve's exit came at the end of season 3, in the finale "The Instant White-Hot Wild." After secretly training to fight Homelander and supplying Butcher with Temp V, she finally got her shot — stabbing Homelander in the ear during their rooftop brawl and drawing blood for the first time.
But when Soldier Boy's nuclear-powered blast threatened to kill Starlight and the rest of the Boys, Maeve made a choice. She grabbed Soldier Boy and threw both of them out of a Vought Tower window, absorbing the full force of the explosion on the way down.
The fall didn't kill her. But Soldier Boy's blast did strip away her powers — permanently.
Vought publicly announced that Queen Maeve had died heroically. In reality, she survived, faked her death, and disappeared off-grid with her girlfriend Elena. The season's final moments showed the two of them heading out together, with Elena joking about going to Modesto.
Why she didn't return for seasons 4 or 5
The in-universe explanation is clean enough: Maeve is depowered, in hiding, and believed dead by Homelander. Dragging her back into the fight would risk exposing her — and with no powers, she'd be of limited tactical use.
The real-world explanation is simpler. McElligott retired from acting. Kripke confirmed this in interviews after the series finale aired in May 2026, telling TV Insider that he'd personally reached out about a cameo.
"It was very pleasant and respectful. She just said, 'I've kind of retired from acting. I'm not really acting anymore, and I'm busy those dates anyway.' That was honestly it."
McElligott's last credited role was The Boys season 3 in 2022. She has since deleted her social media presence entirely and stepped out of public life.
