The Batman: Part 2’s stealthy working title may have just unmasked the sequel’s villains, teasing which Gotham rogues Matt Reeves is unleashing when the DC epic lands next year.

File this under 'interesting detective work from hardcore Batman fans': the working title for The Batman: Part 2 just dropped, and it's thrown gasoline on the never-ending speculation around which villains are in the crosshairs for Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's next round in Gotham.

In case you missed it, The Batman 2 (officially still 'Part 2') is set to hit theaters October 1, 2027. Reeves is back to direct and, unless Pattinson suddenly realizes how comfortable sweaters are and retires to the English countryside, he's back in the Bat-suit as Bruce Wayne.

What Exactly Is the Working Title?

Here's the part that got Reddit and Twitter (sorry, 'X') buzzing: according to a new film production listing, the working title for the sequel is 'Semper Vigilans'. If your Latin is rusty (mine is nonexistent), that means 'always vigilant' or 'ever watching.' Kind of Batman's whole deal – this is the guy who stalks alleys in daylight savings season for fun – but comic readers smelled something more.

Some folks are convinced this is a not-so-subtle signal that the Court of Owls are coming. If you’re not up to speed on your Batman lore or just skipped the comics for all the brooding in Reeves’s first film, the Court of Owls are one of the newer, creepier additions to Gotham’s criminal underbelly.

Who Are the Court of Owls?

  • They first showed up in 2012, brought to life by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo in Batman #6.
  • Basically: shadowy cabal of Gotham’s rich and powerful, supposedly pulling strings on the city from behind the scenes for generations.
  • Their hands aren’t exactly clean – they use spooky nursery rhymes, secret assassins called Talons, and a whole lot of murder to keep their grip on power.

Here’s the rhyme from the comics that has Bat-fans connecting dots (and if this doesn’t sound like the kind of thing Reeves would make extra creepy, I don’t know what does):

'Beware The Court of Owls, that watches all the time, ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch, behind granite and lime. They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed, speak not a whispered word of them, or they'll send the Talon for your head.'

So yeah, 'ever watching' suddenly sounds a lot more like a wink-and-nod at the Court than just Batman’s own sleep deprivation manifesto. But, to be fair, this is all still speculation – no actual plot details have slipped out, because Warner Bros. seem determined to keep everything locked in the Batcave for as long as possible.

Where Does That Leave Us?

At this point, it's less 'breaking news' and more 'fan theory with some actual roots.' There’s been zero confirmation that the Court of Owls is in the movie, and with Reeves, that probably means we’re in for a long wait before anyone blinks.

Either way, 'Semper Vigilans' is a pretty loaded clue if you’re the type who likes dissecting every breadcrumb between now and 2027. Let the wild theories begin...
