That streaming leak? Mutiny’s box office is hurting — Jason Statham can’t catch a break

Jason Statham's got a new one out, Mutiny, but if you're hoping for a big comeback or a box office smash, best manage your expectations. The film's release hasn't just hit a speed bump, it's driven straight into a pothole the size of Amazon Prime Video. Amazingly, the entire movie leaked onto streaming by accident, right before it was due to hit cinemas.

Leaked Before It Even Opened

Word started spreading on Reddit that Mutiny, starring Statham as a Marine framed for murder (because of course he is), appeared for free on Prime Video in the States. The film stayed up just long enough for the internet to notice before it was yanked. The Verge double-checked and confirmed it wasn't supposed to be there, and there's no sign it was a cheeky marketing move—just a proper blunder. If you're Lionsgate or anyone who sunk cash into it (the thing cost $40 million), you'll be absolutely fuming. This sort of error can demolish opening weekend prospects, especially for mid-budget action films fighting for attention.

Box Office: Soft Would Be an Understatement

Mutiny is launching in just under 2,700 North American cinemas on 21 August 2026. Normally, a Jason Statham actioner might hope for a decent turnout, but the forecasts are hovering in 'high single-digit millions'—translation: less than $10 million for opening weekend. For context, that's nowhere near blockbuster territory, and well behind the current juggernaut, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That one's still going in its fourth weekend, shattering records and recently becoming the fastest film to top $800 million domestically. Mutiny, meanwhile, feels like it's landed on the wrong weekend entirely.

Thing is, it's not just Spidey. Sony's horror sequel, Insidious: Out of the Further, is opening big the same weekend in about 3,000 cinemas, and they're expecting to pull in about $23 million off an $18 million investment—a much tidier bit of business. Then you've got Nolan's The Odyssey, Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, and Oak Street all still lingering. It's proper overcrowded; not an ideal launch environment, especially now that Mutiny's target audience may have already watched it gratis.
