Blame AI: Robin Williams’ kids revive his Instagram account
Robin Williams’ kids have brought his long-dormant account back to life to take aim at the AI slop targeting their dad.
Here's something you probably wouldn't expect to see pop up on your feed in 2026: Robin Williams's old Instagram account blinking back to life after more than a decade of digital silence. But it's not nostalgia or a marketing gimmick behind this resurrection—it's his kids trying to put a stop to all the dodgy AI videos and deepfakes cropping up online.
Robin Williams's Instagram, inactive since his death in 2014, is now back—run by his children to fight AI exploitation of his likeness.
After years of fake, weirdly unsettling AI clips trying (and failing) to capture their dad's actual presence, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams decided enough was enough. The three posted a joint statement on Robin's verified account, making it clear this wasn't about sentimental throwbacks, but an attempt to draw a line against all the AI-generated content popping up on TikTok, Instagram, and every other corner of the internet.
The Family's Statement
The Williams siblings used Robin's Instagram—now logged in for the first time since 2014—to mark what would have been his 75th year and set the record straight. They say they're glad people are still discovering and sharing their dad's work, but they want this particular space to stay authentic. In their own words on the account:
As technology evolves, we want this to be a safe, trusted place where the stories, photos, videos, and memories shared reflect his legacy with authenticity, warmth, and care.
They also said running the account is now their way to keep Robin's actual humour and life in circulation, rather than watching his image get warped by AI for trends and cheap likes.
Zelda Williams: Enough is Enough
Zelda Williams took to her personal Instagram to admit it's "a little strange" logging back in to her late dad's account, but she made the family's intentions clear—this move is all about providing a place for the real Robin Williams, not some algorithm's synthetic idea of him. Zelda pointed out that filling the account with genuine clips and memories is the best defence they've found so far against what she calls 'rampant AI abuse' of her dad's voice and face.
- Last year, Zelda already voiced her frustration about AI 'puppeteering' Robin on TikTok, saying she couldn't stand the endless cheap, overprocessed AI content.
She didn't mince her words, describing the worst of it as people "making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else's throat hoping they'll give you a little thumbs up and like it." That paints the picture, if you wondered how she really feels about the AI tributes flooding social media.
