Twists multiply and new male players enter the fray as The Housemaid’s Secret, the sequel to Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid, readies a darker, juicier second act.

If you thought The Housemaid was wild, its sequel is shaping up to be even more of a ride. Sydney Sweeney is back with The Housemaid’s Secret, and according to the brains behind it, they're throwing more twists, bigger characters, and a whole lot more cash into the mix.

Bigger Budget, Bigger Drama

At Cannes, Lionsgate's Helen Lee-Kim dropped some details that definitely crank up the hype. First off, the sequel is getting a massive budget bump—think $70-80 million territory. For a domestic thriller, that's serious money, so expect everything to look slicker, nastier, and probably more expensive to clean up after all the secrets come out.

What's Changing for Round Two?

Lee-Kim summed up the sequel like this:

'It’s an expansion of the world from the first film. The second book is even twistier and it’ll be a more unexpected movie. It’ll be structured a little differently. We’re aiming to be filming by year’s end. The whole creative team is back, as are Sydney [Sweeney] and Michele Morrone, who has a bigger role this time. Kirsten [Dunst] is aboard, and then we have two other fun male roles that we’re casting now.'

So, aside from Sweeney and Morrone coming back (and Morrone graduates to a more important part), Kirsten Dunst is officially in the mix. They're also hunting for two new male actors, so the casting carousel isn't done spinning.

What’s the Story This Time?

The sequel is once again based on Freida McFadden's bestsellers. The first Housemaid, in case you missed it, had Sweeney's character, Millie Calloway, snooping through the private mess of a wealthy family. That flick pulled in nearly $499 million worldwide, which probably explains why everybody wanted back in on the sequel.

The Housemaid’s Secret moves the action to a New York penthouse. Here's the quick lowdown (and, honestly, it's as juicy as you'd hope):

  • Millie lands a job cleaning the Garrick family's swanky penthouse—good views, glossy kitchen, all the upgrades she's not actually allowed to use.
  • She notices something's off: Mrs. Garrick is MIA, but Millie keeps hearing her cry and finds bloodstains on the woman's nightgowns while doing laundry.
  • Curiosity gets the better of her (because of course), so when she finally cracks open the mysterious guest bedroom door, what she finds spins the story in a completely new direction.

The Team and Timeline

Paul Feig is back to direct, so the tone and style should feel familiar if you liked the first round. There's also some fun continuity—an alternate scene in the original hinted at plots they'll unravel in this movie.

They're planning to start filming by the end of the year, and you can mark your calendar for December 17, 2027 (which feels like a lifetime from now, but hey, good things and all that).

Long story short: more money, a stacked cast, and what sounds like an even more bonkers storyline. Consider my interest piqued.
