Sweet Magnolias Loses Fan-Favorite Star Just Days Before Season 5 Premiere
Sweet Magnolias returns June 11, 2026, but fan favorite Carson Rowland is out. The actor behind Tyler Ty Townsend has exited the series just days before the Season 5 premiere.
Well, here's a bit of late-breaking TV drama for you: Sweet Magnolias is back on the horizon with a fifth season, but one of the show's central faces won’t be returning, and fans are (understandably) a bit thrown by the timing.
Carson Rowland Bows Out
The big news: Carson Rowland – the bloke who’s been playing Tyler 'Ty' Townsend since the show began – officially won’t be back for Season 5, which drops on 11 June 2026.
If that feels a bit abrupt, you’re not alone. According to showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, this was entirely Rowland’s call. She told Us Weekly that he made the decision to move on. There’s no grand statement from Rowland himself, just a lot of radio silence so far. Not especially enlightening, but there it is.
If you watched Season 4, you probably noticed his screentime got trimmed back already – a move that, in hindsight, looks less like 'plot twist' and more like 'soft exit'.
Why the Fans Are Gutted
Predictably, fans aren’t best pleased, given the big Ty-and-Annie romantic crescendo that rounded off last season. Social media and the actor’s own Instagram have been full of comments that are equal parts shocked and gutted.
- 'Cannot believe that we won’t see you on season 5.'
- 'I’m going to miss you in Sweet Magnolias omg.'
- 'Think over coming back for season 6 – you’re a big part of the story.'
So yes, people are taking it a bit personally.
Showrunner’s Take: Turning Lemons into, Erm, Plot
Sheryl J. Anderson, who’s clearly got some plate-spinning ahead, told press they’ll work round Ty’s departure with a meaningful story. To paraphrase her, the new season will look at what happens when people leave those they care about to chase after their ambitions. She put it like this:
[They wanted to] look at what happens when people leave the people they love to chase a dream.
Not a bad way to keep the character’s impact alive, even in his absence.
Support From the Cast
Over to Anneliese Judge (who plays Annie): she’s made it clear the cast are backing Rowland’s decision. Apparently, he’s landed 'other opportunities', and everyone’s genuinely happy for him. She calls him 'a really, really good friend', and it sounds like there’s no gossip or behind-the-scenes drama here – just someone taking the next step.
Who’s Actually Coming Back?
Most of the regulars are returning, so the show’s still got its core trio and, well, most everyone fans care about. A handful of new faces are being added this year too: Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Janice Wesley, Courtney Grace, John Gabriel Rodriquez, Aidan Merwarth, Austin Woods, and Iman Benson will all turn up in Season 5.
