Turns out MCU fans helped steer how Spider-Man: Brand New Day wraps up — and the reason for the switch isn’t what you’d expect.

Right, you know a film’s made a splash when the bloke running Marvel’s films pops up at universities to chat about it. That’s precisely what Kevin Feige did at a recent Spider-Man: Brand New Day screening at USC. Not content to let the movie speak for itself, he let slip a rather decent behind-the-scenes story about how the film’s ending came to be — and, rather refreshingly, fans aren’t just bit players this time, but the direct inspiration.

The third Spider-Man film smashed $2.339 billion at the box office worldwide within a month of its 31 July release.

Fans on Set, Ending Changes

Here’s what Feige had to say after the screening, talking about a standout moment from filming. Apparently, during the very first week of production, when they were doing the big tank sequence, there were hundreds of actual, live humans (not the digital sort) lining the street. People with their phones out, shouting, making a proper scene. It created such a buzz — and, as Feige himself pointed out, looked ‘awesome’ for the cameras. The rig setup was hefty: a massive contraption letting a stuntman swing back and forth above a tank, landing with all the usual superhero flamboyance.

Now, he reckons that whole atmosphere seeped into the actual film — specifically, the ending. What you see on screen, with people cheering Spider-Man on as he recovers in hospital, that was pinched right from real life. It’s not nostalgia or retcon — crowd energy on day one literally nudged the story:

Introducing the anecdote at the event, Feige told the audience, ‘The very first week of production, there were hundreds of people on the street, and they were all filming. So, it got a lot of press. But it happened to also look awesome, because there was a giant rig above this tank driving and an actual stuntman swinging back and forth through it and landing on the side of it.’

He then gave extra credit to director Destin Daniel Cretton and the rest of the team for just running with it. When fans cheered and actually shouted ‘We love you, Spider-Man’ at the set, it inspired that proper rousing finale in the finished film. This wasn’t a marketing ploy — real people made it in, right there at the start. Truth is, sometimes the audience does write the story, even if it’s only by shouting from the pavement.

Keeping the Records Coming

Money talk: Brand New Day has not just topped the Spider-Man franchise, it’s staked its claim high on the all-time leaderboard, slotting in as the third biggest earner ever — just behind a couple of the usual behemoths. Quick aside: it’s currently the top-grossing film of 2026, ahead of The Odyssey and Toy Story 5. Marvel fans still have their eyes on Avengers: Doomsday, pegged for release on 18 December, which could yet upset the leaderboard again.
