Superman spinoff Mister Terrific just got its first major update in three years

DC Studios has been teasing new telly projects left, right and centre, but there’s one that’s been in limbo so long you’d be forgiven for forgetting it even existed. I’m talking about Mister Terrific. Nearly three years after word first got out that this show was in the works, there’s finally been a decent bit of movement – and it’s not just conceptual scribbles on a napkin any more.

Yes, Mister Terrific Is Actually Moving Forward

Here’s the latest: DC Studios has officially attached a writer to its long-in-gestation Mister Terrific series. The Hollywood Reporter have it that Allan Heinberg – yes, that Allan Heinberg – is now on board to write the pilot. That makes him the very first proper team member to sign on to the project. No, the series hasn’t been given the green light to go into full production, but with Heinberg aboard, it’s clear development isn’t just for show.

For anyone wondering why Mister Terrific has been in the news lately, it’s partly because Edi Gathegi – who’s slated to reprise the role – has already made his DCU debut in Superman. Word on the street is that Gathegi’s take on Michael Holt (the superbrain also known as Mister Terrific) really turned heads, setting off all kinds of speculation about the character getting more screen time in DC’s upcoming line-up.

Allan Heinberg: Quite the CV

Heinberg’s involvement is genuinely noteworthy, and here’s why:

• He’s written for Sex and the City, The OC, and Grey's Anatomy – properly varied telly experience, that.
• More recently, he wrote and exec produced Netflix’s The Sandman adaptation.
• Film-wise, he wrote the screenplay for 2017’s Wonder Woman.
• He’s penned Wonder Woman and Justice League comics for DC.
• Outside of DC, he co-created Marvel’s Young Avengers with artist Jim Cheung.

If you want someone who knows their way around a comic book property (and can spin it for telly), Heinberg’s about as safe a pair of hands as you’ll get.

The Current State of Play

Here’s where it gets a bit murky: DC Studios still haven’t announced which platform this Mister Terrific series will turn up on, nor when we might see it. There’s still no series order, and the rest of the details – cast, director, number of episodes – remain entirely under wraps. So don’t be surprised if it stays on the backburner for a while yet.

Meanwhile, DC’s latest big-screen outing, Supergirl, only just hit cinemas on 26 June 2026. That one's directed by Craig Gillespie, with Milly Alcock donning the cape. Supergirl is still running at the box office as we speak.

As for Mister Terrific, for the first time in ages it’s officially more than a hypothetical. And DC fans who liked what Gathegi did in Superman will be keeping an eye out for his next turn as Michael Holt – whenever that materialises.
