David Corenswet says the Man of Tomorrow characters are 'a little more mature' — the sequel puts Superman in an uneasy alliance with Lex Luthor
David Corenswet is hinting Man of Tomorrow will show Superman in a different light — the sort that’ll make DCU fans sit up.
If you thought the new DC Universe was just going to lean into bright colours and cheerful optimism after 2025's Superman, you might want to brace yourself. David Corenswet's back for the sequel – yes, Man of Tomorrow – and he’s been hinting that it's not all sunshine and capes this time around.
The sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is currently set for a UK cinema release date of 9 July 2027.

From Bright to Grown-Up
Corenswet spoke a bit about the new direction in an Entertainment Tonight interview, and it sounds like James Gunn's plotting a tonal shift again – not going gritty, but less wide-eyed. Apparently, we’re looking at superheroics with a dash more nuance and a lot less brooding. Or, to quote our new Superman himself, here’s what Corenswet said about the sequel’s approach:
‘The characters are a little more mature. They're going to go a little bit deeper. Not to mention all the crazy stuff. Nick Hoult in the Warsuit!’
If you remember, Superman (2025) took a sharp turn away from the dimly lit Snyderverse, with Gunn promising heartfelt, compassionate storytelling. Now, for the follow-up, Corenswet hints that the team’s keeping things grown-up, chilled out, and more layered for the returning heroes and villains.
Who's Flying In?
The returning faces and new additions on the cast list alone are worth a look. Corenswet is back as Clark Kent/Superman. Nicholas Hoult returns as Lex Luthor – and yes, with that much-teased ‘Warsuit’. Brainiac’s in the mix too, played by Lars Eidinger, and expect more DC staples: Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. That’s before adding in new, still-mysterious roles for Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, Sinqua Walls, and Adria Arjona

Again, proper DC fans will be clocking at least three or four big comic book line-ups there, so this is shaping up to be quite the ensemble.
Plot in Brief (Such as We Know It)
As always with James Gunn, major plot details are on lockdown. What has slipped out is that Superman and his arch-rival Lex Luthor are being forced to team up against a bigger threat: Brainiac poised as the main villain. Rest assured, it won’t be a straight-up team-up – the gist is an ‘uneasy alliance’, which is basically code for constant side-eye and a likely double-cross before the credits roll.
If that’s not enough, expect an assortment of additional superheroes getting screen time. Alongside Superman, you’ll get Supergirl, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Blue Beetle and, based on the casting, probably a few more heroes and wild-card characters thrown into the mix.
James Gunn is both writing and directing, so expect the usual mix of meta humour and a dash of sincere weirdness sitting alongside the superhero spectacle.
Man of Tomorrow lands in cinemas on 9 July 2027, if the DCU can keep from shifting release dates again.
