DC fans asked James Gunn for a director's cut of Superman. He says they have already seen it
If you’re wondering whether a Superman director’s cut will ever happen, James Gunn has recently given DCU fans an answer.
Right, here we go — in the never-ending saga of director's cuts, James Gunn has given fans a crystal-clear answer about the 2025 Superman film. After months of speculation online (because of course there was), Gunn himself finally nipped it in the bud.
Asked directly on Threads whether there's any sort of "director's cut" sat waiting for a streaming debut, Gunn shot back: "Yes! The one that was in theaters!"
That's not exactly a cryptic tease. Basically: the bloke made the film he wanted, put it in the cinema last year, and that's your lot. If you were hoping for some extended version full of deleted Kryptonian monologues or extra bits of Lex Luthor scheming, you can stop holding out.
Corenswet's Superman nails it at the box office
Just to recap, the most recent Superman introduced David Corenswet in the cape, with the story focused squarely on Clark Kent dealing with his split heritage – half-human heart, half-Kryptonian guilt trip – and squaring off against the ever-hammy Lex Luthor. Warner Bros. were hardly shy about the budget, but it paid off: the film brought in $618.7 million worldwide.
That entire $618.7 million haul for Superman came from the version Gunn actually intended – no alternate edit in sight.
So when Gunn says what you saw was his cut, he means it. The final product is exactly how he envisioned Superman's cinematic return.

The next chapter: Man of Tomorrow
If you're already wondering what's next for the DC Universe, Gunn's following it up with Man of Tomorrow in 2027 – and he's not just recycling the old Superman/Luthor rivalry. This time out, Superman and Luthor are actually forced to work together (yes, really) because of a much bigger headache: Brainiac, the classic villain every comics nerd with a hard drive full of back issues has been waiting for.
The cast lineup is conventionally stacked:

Details are still mostly under wraps, but the basic gist (according to IMDb at least) remains: Superman and Lex Luthor, frenemies by force, banding together to stop a full-on planetary crisis. You'll be able to see the result in cinemas on 9 July 2027, barring any catastrophic delays or alien invasions of the Warner Bros. lot.
