Supergirl races to streaming much sooner than expected
New reports drop as the latest DCU movie sputters at the box office, piling fresh pressure on a franchise still searching for its footing.
If you missed Supergirl in the cinema – and judging by those box office numbers, basically everyone did – you won’t have to wait long before you can watch it at home. Warner Bros is shifting gears and giving this latest addition to the DC Universe a pretty brisk arrival onto streaming, clearly hoping to staunch the wound after a tough theatrical run.
So, just how tough are we talking? Well, Supergirl barely made a dent at the box office, with ticket sales actually declining, week after week – which is honestly impressive, in a car crash sort of way, given how much superhero films cost to make these days. It’s a heavy drop for what’s presumably supposed to be the new face of the DCU. Warner obviously isn’t waiting around for a miracle turnaround. The plan now is to try and salvage the situation on streaming, and fast.
DC’s Streaming Pivot: Timing and Hopes
Normally you’d expect a film like this to enjoy a lengthy gap between cinema and digital release – studios need that exclusive first window to squeeze every penny from die-hard fans. Not this time. Warner is reportedly racing Supergirl to streaming platforms at record speed, presumably in the slim hope it’ll catch fire with viewers who just didn’t fancy leaving the house (or parting with £15 for a ticket).
It’s always a bit stunning – and, frankly, telling – when a major DC project gets this sort of treatment. The thinking seems to be that streaming might attract a broader audience who just couldn’t be convinced to leave their sofas for capes and CGI showdown number 634. Whether that gamble pays off is anyone’s guess, but Warner Bros clearly isn’t betting on a big comeback at the multiplex. Cutting their losses is the name of the game now.
