Stranger Things Breakout Caleb McLaughlin Returns To Lead Netflix’s Next Star-Studded AI Thriller
Stranger Things may be winding down, but Caleb McLaughlin’s Netflix run is just heating up. He’s joined a star-studded AI thriller that unites major Hollywood names in front of and behind the camera.
Stranger Things might be wrapping up, but Caleb McLaughlin is clearly not slowing down. Netflix has locked him in for their latest 'wait, is this going to make us paranoid about AI?' thriller, and the names attached are, frankly, impressive.
So, What Is This Movie?
The project is still untitled (great start, Netflix), and they’re keeping plot details close to the vest. All that’s confirmed: it’s a thriller about artificial intelligence, it’s landing at Netflix, and it’s supposed to start filming later this summer. Safe to say, this is the streamer betting big on the tech paranoia trend — and on some proven talent behind and in front of the camera.
Who's Making This?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is directing the film and co-wrote the script with Kieran Fitzgerald. Natasha Lyonne is also credited on the project, which is interesting — she usually picks sharp, off-kilter material, so don’t expect this to be a cut-and-paste AI cautionary tale.
Production is being handled by T-Street Productions, which is Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s outfit. You probably know them as the duo behind the Knives Out movies, also for Netflix. So this movie joins a growing list of star-driven, high-profile thrillers that the streamer seems determined to make their brand.
The Cast: A Who’s Who
- Caleb McLaughlin: Hot off Stranger Things’ final season. Plus, he just voiced the lead in Sony Animation’s Goat — the kid’s booked and busy.
- Rachel McAdams: Yes, that Rachel McAdams. No word on her role, but she’s joining the party.
- Jeff Daniels: Just starred in Netflix’s adaptation of A Man in Full (dropping in 2025), so clearly there’s a pipeline between Daniels and Netflix right now.
- Joel Edgerton: He got rave reviews at Sundance for Train Dreams, which Netflix scooped up. That film also managed a Best Picture Oscar nom, so Edgerton is bringing some heavy prestige energy here.
- Nnamdi Asomugha: Yet another solid addition.
This Isn’t Random
There’s at least a bit of 'passion project' energy here. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has spent the last few years talking publicly about AI — what excites him, what scares him, what could go wrong. In other words, he’s not just jumping on the bandwagon because AI is buzzy right now. And given his background — starring in everything from Looper to Snowden to (let’s not forget) directing Don Jon — he’s got experience tackling tech and paranoia from a few different angles.
Netflix hasn’t dropped a logline, a release window, or even tossed us some over-the-top ‘the future is now’ teaser copy. But the combination of talent, genre, and (let’s be honest) all the weird energy around AI lately, is reason enough to pay attention.
'I’m fascinated by artificial intelligence — both the upsides and the stuff that keeps you up at night.' (paraphrased)
So there it is: Caleb McLaughlin is keeping his Netflix streak alive, and the streamer is tossing him into another one of their star-packed puzzles — this time with a potentially wild, AI-fueled twist. Expect more actual details once Netflix decides to let anyone in on what this movie is about.
