The Brat Pack could be back: Rob Lowe says the St. Elmo's Fire sequel script lands next week

Right, if you grew up anywhere near the '80s movie scene or just have a soft spot for old-school Brat Pack drama, this'll get your attention: the long-whispered-about sequel to St. Elmo's Fire has finally got some proper movement behind it. After years of squinting at rumours, we might just see those Georgetown misfits back on screen — unless the script vanishes down another Hollywood black hole, as these things often do.

Lowe puts a pin in it

Rob Lowe, who played Billy the sax bloke in the original, popped up on US telly at the weekend and finally gave a straight answer. Not just that 'yeah, we'd all love to, someday' waffle. He said it on Watch What Happens Live, which isn't exactly where you'd expect breaking news, but I'll take progress wherever it comes. The project, he says, is not only "in the works", but they've got a real deadline coming up: the first draft of the script lands in the first week of October.

On Watch What Happens Live, Rob Lowe told viewers: "It is definitely in the works, for sure. All of us actors want to do it, and we're supposed to get a draft of the script the first week of October."

October is now the date fans have something real to hang on to, and that genuinely makes a difference after two years of everyone (including Lowe himself) talking around in circles. Back at the start, Lowe met with the studio, telling Entertainment Tonight he'd been in those vague chats “for about four months,” and was stressing how painfully early everything was (he dropped ‘very’ five times — not a typo). And now, it seems, there's actually a script on the way for everyone to argue about.

Who else is back?

It's not just Lowe stoking the nostalgia engine. Demi Moore — also part of the original group — confirmed Sony still owns the keys and was leaning in. She was careful to say talks were in progress and only got as far as saying the studio was “driving this,” but they're still looking for the right writer. So, don’t picture anyone on set just yet; the proper work’s still ahead.

As for whether the rest of the cast will come back as their now-middle-aged selves, that's all up in the air. Lowe's keen and has said he finds the whole idea "super exciting" — but for now, it’s script first, everything else second.

Speaking with ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese, Lowe explained: "Yeah, I'm super excited about it. We're trying to get the script right."

So, to tally it up, here’s where things stand: there’s no filming date, no release schedule, and the only thing that's really locked is that October 2026 script deadline. Unless the script is dreadful (or the actors just can’t be bothered any more), this is as serious as we've seen from the St Elmo’s Fire sequel since talk of a reunion started back up. After teasing fans for years, an actual date for new material feels, well, surprisingly solid.
