Paramount turbocharged CinemaCon with the first footage from Sonic the Hedgehog 4, teasing the blue blur’s team-up with an unlikely hero. The sequel races into theaters March 19, 2027.

Here we go again: Sonic the Hedgehog is getting a fourth movie, and yes, Paramount just gave CinemaCon attendees a sneak peek. The footage wasn’t long, but it was weird enough to raise some eyebrows — mostly because Sonic has apparently decided to team up with the one guy you'd never expect.

Sonic’s New Sidekick? You’re Not Gonna Guess

So, what’s going on in this mysterious CinemaCon footage? According to folks on the ground, Sonic and his usual squad (think: a rainbow of superpowered hedgehogs) show up, but the surprise is who’s giving them directions. Jim Carrey is back as Dr. Robotnik, and for reasons the studio’s not ready to spill, he’s now leading the gang. Yes — the same evil genius who tried to zap them into oblivion three times already is suddenly the guy in charge of saving the world. I mean, if you’re into villains making face-heel turns, this is about as extreme as it gets.

'Sonic and his team are working with Robotnik, who’s now on a mission to save the world.' (That’s the big CinemaCon tease. Translation: plot twist incoming.)

As for the bigger picture? The plot is basically a black box right now. Paramount isn’t giving away anything beyond this upside-down alliance and a whole lot of nostalgia for Sega’s mascot.

The Cast: Who’s Running This Show?

Jeff Fowler (director of the first three) is still in the driver’s seat, so expect a similar vibe. Here’s the rundown of who’s back and who’s new:

  • Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of Sonic (honestly, hard to imagine anyone else after three movies)
  • Idris Elba as Knuckles (yes, still cool)
  • Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow, because apparently nothing is impossible
  • James Marsden as Tom, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails, and Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone — so all the core humans and critters are still around
  • Fresh faces: Kristen Bell, Ben Kingsley, Matt Berry, Nick Offerman, and Richard Ayoade all have new roles, but what exactly they’re up to is still a mystery

Producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara are also sticking around, keeping this madness on track.

March 2027: Sonic’s Path Is (Mostly) Clear

The movie is landing in theaters March 19, 2027, and right now, it’s pretty much got the date to itself. No direct competition, but the same month will see a parade of other blockbusters stomping around the box office: Michael B. Jordan doing The Thomas Crown Affair remake, Disney’s Gatto, Scarlett Johansson’s The Exorcist: Deceiver, a new Godzilla vs. Kong monster mash-up (Supernova), and Mel Gibson’s The Resurrection of the Christ (yes, the sequel).

Bottom line: Sonic 4 has the nostalgia and the star power, and now apparently some 'let’s team up with the villain' energy. This franchise keeps finding new ways to be just strange enough to make you wonder what’s next. Stay tuned — I’ll be watching for when the next batch of details finally drops.
