Shailene Woodley says Big Little Lies season 3 'is happening' — and she hasn't signed for it
Shailene Woodley has poured fuel on Big Little Lies Season 3 rumours, hinting Jane Chapman could return — and dropping a line you’ll probably take as confirmation.
Here we go again with the Monterey crowd – and yes, those constant Big Little Lies comeback rumours just got another shot in the arm. If you were hoping for definitive answers, you might want to keep crossing your fingers, but one key cast member is certainly stirring the pot.
Woodley Fans the Flames
Shailene Woodley, fresh from scooping her first ever Emmy for Paradise Season 2, hasn’t exactly poured cold water on speculation she’ll be back as Jane Chapman for a third round. In fact, she’s been doing the opposite. While out at the Creative Arts Emmys, she popped up in an E! chat to offer a sly nudge about whether Season 3 is coming. Here’s her exact response when pressed on the matter:
‘That’s what I hear. So, I’m going to continue throwing that rumor mill out there and feeding it. You know that it is happening.’
Not exactly a press release from HBO, but it’s the strongest hint we’ve had from any of the leads in ages – and frankly, she looked rather pleased with herself while saying it. Makes you wonder how close we are to an announcement, doesn’t it?
The Next Chapter
If you thought season three would be another rehash, think again. This chapter is expected to mine inspiration from Liane Moriarty’s brand-new book, Big Little Truths. Only a few weeks back, Moriarty herself confirmed to E! that producers have read her latest, offering ‘nice things’ in reply. So, the pipeline is humming along at least on the writing side.
Moriarty told E! that ‘The producers have read it. They said nice things.’
It’s going to pick up years on from where season two left off, kicking off with Madeline marking her 50th birthday. Then, events quickly spiral (shocking, I know): the Monterey circle is unsettled by a mysterious bloke lurking around the local school, poking about with what seem like innocent questions, only for old secrets to threaten the fragile truce among the women.
Who’s Actually Returning?
HBO is still keeping the official cast list under wraps, but if you’re holding out for a full reunion, don’t get carried away just yet. Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are apparently expected to be back, but Woodley – despite her enthusiasm – still hasn’t confirmed she’s signed. It’s a similar story for Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, and Meryl Streep: all unconfirmed for now.
Woodley’s made it known she’s keen for filming to start as soon as possible, but – and it’s a big but – the TV version could stray quite a bit from the original material, just as it did last time out.
‘Big Little Truths’ will be the basis for Season 3 and picks up with the women after Madeline’s 50th birthday.
