Seth MacFarlane Sets Sights on More Ted: Season 3 or Ted 3 Movie on Peacock?
Seth MacFarlane wants more Ted—either a third film or another season of the live-action Peacock series.
It turns out that Seth MacFarlane isn’t quite done with his foul-mouthed CGI teddy bear, but the fate of Ted isn’t exactly in his hands. If you’ve been following this franchise from the days of bear-and-bong jokes on the big screen to the surprisingly solid prequel series on Peacock, you probably sensed this was coming: keeping Ted alive costs a lot of money, and the only folks with pockets deep enough are Peacock themselves.
The Ted Universe in a Nutshell
Quick recap, in case you missed a chapter: Seth MacFarlane (yes, that's the guy from Family Guy and American Dad) launched Ted back in 2012 as an R-rated comedy with Mark Wahlberg playing John Bennett, the grown-up with a lifelong talking teddy bear problem. Two movies later, Universal had raked in over $765 million globally. Which is a pretty good haul for a CGI stuffed animal who basically throws out punchlines about as often as he throws back beers.
Fast forward to the streaming era: MacFarlane and Peacock rolled out the Ted TV series, this time dialing the clock back to the 1990s to show a teenage John (played by Max Burkholder) and his slightly less grizzled, but just as inappropriate, bear. The series managed to carve out a solid audience on Peacock for two seasons, which is longer than most network sitcoms can say these days.
Why Ted 3 Isn’t a Sure Thing
Here’s where things get tricky: CGI isn’t getting cheaper. Actually, the bill for animating Ted is high enough that even Peacock—the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal—told MacFarlane to hold up before dreaming about Season 3. They basically said, 'Look, unless you can figure out how to make your bear without CGI (good luck?), there’s no practical way to get these costs down.' So for now, a third season isn’t happening under the current financial model.
So, Is This the End?
Not necessarily. At a recent TV industry event, MacFarlane made it clear he’s not closing the book on Ted just yet. He’s openly floated the idea of doing either a third season or another movie-style feature—streaming-only, most likely. The catch? It rests entirely on whether Peacock feels like spending that sweet, sweet streaming cash they swim in.
"It really is up to Peacock with their, you know, vast amounts of big Scrooge McDuck money that they dive into every day. I think all of us, in some form or another, whether it’s a Season 3 of 'Ted' or a direct-to-Peacock feature with this cast, is something I think we'd all be up for. It's all on the table."
That’s MacFarlane being, well, very MacFarlane about it. Clearly, he loves the character and would throw him into just about any format if someone else is footing the CGI bill.
What About the Cast?
Even Alanah Ubach, who plays John’s mom Susan on the show, is up for more bear antics. She put it this way: since Ted is all about the characters (and apparently, raunchy talking plushies), the options are "endless."
Where Do Things Stand?
- Ted movies (2012, 2015): Raking in $765M+ globally, thanks mostly to the central bear-human bromance and too many inappropriate jokes to count.
- Ted TV show on Peacock: Two seasons, set in the 90s, did well but hit a wall because animating a Boston-accented teddy bear is expensive.
- Season 3 or another movie? That’s up to Peacock—and whether they want to open the vault for another round. MacFarlane and cast? They’re ready when (if) the money arrives.
So the verdict: It’s all in corporate hands now. If MacFarlane and his cast get the green light (and the budget), you’ll see more Ted. If not, well, at least we got two movies and a throwback series. Stay tuned—this bear has a habit of popping back up when you least expect it.
