Sebastian Stan pitched Kevin Feige a low-budget Winter Soldier thriller — fifteen years as Bucky and still no solo film
Sebastian Stan says he pitched Kevin Feige a Bucky Barnes solo film, and whatever he suggested has fans clamouring for Marvel to get it made.
If you have ever wondered what Bucky Barnes would get up to if Marvel dropped the CGI fireworks and just let Sebastian Stan go rogue with a character drama—well, you are not alone. Turns out, Stan himself has been having those daydreams, and, in classic Marvel fashion, he has taken them straight to Kevin Feige… not entirely sober, but not entirely joking, either.
A Grounded Winter Soldier?
Stan gave a fresh interview to New York Magazine and let slip that he pitched a solo film for Bucky Barnes. Don’t picture anything bombastic or galaxy-saving. His idea, as he tells it, would be miles away from the usual Marvel extravagance. Should you need a comparison, think more ‘Sicario’, less ‘Infinity War’—deliberately low-key and all about paranoia, obsession, and trauma. Stan put it this way when describing his hope for a more intimate Winter Soldier film:
We keep a real small budget. It’s about a guy who thinks he recognizes someone from his past that had something to do with when, you know, he was brainwashed, and he gets obsessed with this person. He goes on a whole journey to try to figure out who this person is. It’s a thriller.
Not exactly the sort of pitch you expect to hear inside Marvel’s typically risk-averse boardrooms. Still, Stan claims Feige’s response was friendly, if not earth-shattering—basically, ‘Yeah, that sounds cool,’ but with about as much conviction as someone half-listening to a podcast.

Stan has played Bucky since 2011, yet there has never been an actual Winter Soldier solo film.
Fans Want It Yesterday
If any of this hits a nerve for Marvel diehards, you are in good company. Social media exploded after Stan’s pitch made the rounds—fans went all-out, dropping lines like ‘Goddammit Feige, give him his movie!!!’ and ‘HELLO THAT SOUNDS INCREDIBLE?!?!?!’ Far from just memes, the excitement looks genuine, and it is not hard to see why. For Bucky, whose backstory is all about lost memories, moral fog, and guilt piling up, a hard-boiled thriller suits the character to a tee. No aliens, just a man trying to make sense of his butchered past.
The Marvel machine has greenlit risky ideas before—Ryan Gosling got his own Ghost Rider film on the books for 2028 after relentless lobbying—so Stan’s obsession-thriller is not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
But for now, Stan is still showing up in Marvel’s sprawling circus. He’ll return as Bucky in Avengers: Doomsday this December, and there is a chance he’ll feature in the upcoming Secret Wars and possibly Batman Part II. Whether Marvel ever lets him have the keys for this pitch-black solo job? No one’s holding their breath just yet.
