Right, what actually is 'Wardriver'?

Directed by Rebecca Thomas with a script from Daniel Casey, 'Wardriver' first popped up in cinemas back on 20 March 2026, but it kind of floated under the radar for most people. The film’s built around Cole (played by Dane DeHaan), an online hacker-for-hire who’s both cunning and surprisingly mobile–his 'office' is essentially his car, and his method involves lurking within range of dodgy Wi-Fi to fleece companies without anyone clocking on. It’s techy stuff, but it’s not the usual megabudget cyber nonsense–think understated, more than full-on action.

The plot – simple, but with a twist

This is where things get a bit more complicated for Cole. His enterprise takes a sharp turn after he is confronted by Oscar (Mamoudou Athie), who strongarms Cole into swiping a massive chunk of cash–nearly 800 grand–from a woman named Sarah. This might have been just another job, but (of course) feelings get in the way, and Cole’s situation spirals. That one job triggers a much broader set of problems, and not just of the romantic complication variety–real consequences start piling up, all significantly more severe than a spot of internet theft.

Here’s the weird bit: critics adore 'Wardriver', regular punters… less so. On Rotten Tomatoes, it’s sat at a rather smug 100% with critics, though only with 15 reviews as of this writing. Audiences appear less impressed, knocking the user score down to 57%. Not entirely unusual–sometimes a film just lands differently with people who do this for a living.

To quote Collider’s review, because it sort of nails it:

'Wardriver feels familiar. It's Dane DeHaan that makes it worth investing in. If only they had gone deeper, Wardriver could have lifted itself past expectations into something more compelling.'
