RoboCop Returns: Amazon’s Reboot Powers Up
New TV chief Peter Friedlander has given it the nod, landing the project on his short list of confirmed titles.
Well, after way too many years on ice, it looks like RoboCop might actually be stumbling back into action. Yeah, you read that right — the half-man, half-metal Detroit nightmare has been circling the reboot drain for a while, but the latest insider gossip claims there’s serious momentum behind a new RoboCop TV series at Prime Video. And, frankly, it’s about time something happened with this franchise.
The Amazon Shuffle (And Why RoboCop Matters This Time)
So, why now? Basically, Amazon’s Prime Video has been a revolving door for executives lately. The latest card-carrying exec in the big chair is Peter Friedlander — he took over as the global TV chief less than a year ago. Apparently, some folks at Amazon are getting antsy, basically telling him, 'Alright champ, what’s your big play?' Friedlander, not to be outdone, seems to have picked RoboCop for his early slate of projects. Translation: we’re getting that TV show.
Where’s This RoboCop Series Coming From?
To rewind a bit: Prime Video first said they were making a RoboCop show about two years ago. At that point, they’d rounded up some decent talent:
- Peter Ocko (of 'Dead Like Me' and 'Boston Legal' fame) was tapped as showrunner
- James Wan (he directed 'The Conjuring' and 'Furious 7' — both absolute box office monsters) came on as executive producer
Back then, it sounded like they were hitting the reset button and retelling the 1987 classic all over again. The official pitch? 'A giant tech conglomerate teams up with the Detroit PD to unleash a shiny new cyber-cop to fight a crime surge — a police officer who’s part human, part machine.' Real subtle.
This Isn’t the Series’ First Rodeo
Let’s be real: RoboCop has been on the brink of a comeback several times. Remember when Neill Blomkamp was attached to a direct sequel called 'RoboCop Returns'? The whole plan was to ignore the increasingly weird sequels and even sidestep the 2014 remake. Of course, that ended up going nowhere, which brings us to the current attempt at reviving the brand on TV.
Will Peter Weller Suit Up Again?
Now, if you’re crossing your fingers for Peter Weller — the original RoboCop himself — to return, you might want to lower those expectations. Since the show is looking like a flat-out reboot, it’s a safe bet Weller isn’t involved. That said, the rumor mill never dies: people keep asking him if he’d ever come back. Last year he gave the most honest answer possible:
(For the record, Peter Weller is in his late 70s, so suit expectations accordingly.)
Where Does This Leave Us?
Basically: Prime Video, under its new boss, is trying to make some noise, and RoboCop is one of the biggest items on the to-do list. Will this thing finally happen, or will it join the pile of scrapped RoboCop ideas? At the very least, the gears are moving — if you’re a fan of the franchise (or just someone who loves watching reboots do a complicated dance between nostalgia and new stuff), keep your eyes peeled.
