Will Resident Evil get a sequel? Zach Cregger: 'I have no idea' — The Flood and the Weapons prequel come first
Asked by Variety about a direct sequel, Zach Cregger had no plans to share: he is in soft prep on The Flood and has Gladys lined up after it.
If you blinked this weekend, you might’ve missed the Resident Evil mania taking over social media. This new film is already on everyone’s lips, and it's barely settled in at the box office. Naturally, word has spread — will there be a sequel, and how soon can we expect it? Director Zach Cregger himself has popped up in the press, and the situation is, let’s say, far from straightforward.
When prodded by Variety about the odds of a direct sequel, Cregger gave a classic non-answer: 'I have no idea.'
Cregger’s Priorities
That brief statement more or less sums up the current status of Resident Evil 2. There's nothing official in the pipeline, at least as far as Cregger is concerned. Asked if he’s got any ideas himself, he answered with a bit of industry-standard hedging: 'There’s always ideas. You cannot not have ideas.' That’s about as solid as mist, and certainly not confirmation of anything in development.
Meanwhile, Cregger’s time and energy seem to be heavily invested in his other projects. He said he’s in soft prep for his new sci-fi thriller, The Flood, with an eye on getting into 'hard prep' next year. If all goes to plan, shooting for that could get underway by the middle of next summer. On top of that, he’s working on Gladys, a prequel for his horror flick Weapons. That one’s floating somewhere on the calendar after The Flood, though even Cregger doesn't sound entirely sure when viewers will see it.
The critical consensus has landed squarely in the film's favour – Rotten Tomatoes sits at 96% with critics and 90% with audience scores.
Rumours, Release Dates, and Studio Moves
If you're putting two and two together, the bottom line is clear enough: unless Cregger decides to drop everything and jump back into Raccoon City, a sequel to Resident Evil isn't likely to appear for quite some time. (And yes, the studio could bring in another director, which might change the maths, but nothing's set in stone as of September 2026.)
There’s also the matter of the first film’s ending, which, if you ask me, could’ve leaned harder into the sequel hook — but still, plenty of major plot threads were left dangling. Austin Abrams’ character Bryan staggers into the hospital with what could be the last hope for a t-Virus cure, only to morph into a hulking creature before he actually gets it. The cure itself plummets off a sky bridge (because of course it does), probably smashed to bits, with absolutely no post-credits stinger in sight. It's a recipe for speculation, if not outright frustration, and fans are properly chewing over the questions it’s left behind.
