Confused by Resident Evil’s ending cliffhanger? Let’s sort it
That Resident Evil finale doesn’t just roll credits — it drops a cliffhanger where Bryan’s win turns to rot and a potentially lost cure could doom Raccoon City.
Right, let’s get our hands dirty with Resident Evil’s ending – Sony’s latest swing at the undead franchise. For once, they’ve gone off-piste with the plot, swapping out all the familiar faces from the games and sticking us with a new bloke called Bryan. His night isn’t exactly what you’d call a walk in the park unless your local park happens to be hoaching with zombified monsters and collapsing architecture.
The Mystery Delivery
The film kicks off with Bryan hauling a medical transport bag through chaos. At first, he’s convinced he’s just moving an organ – presumably for someone who still stands a chance of outliving their own blood pressure. Only it turns out his cargo’s far more important: two Umbrella Corporation lackeys clue him in that he’s actually lugging a key ingredient for a cure. Confusingly, they also tease some 'top-secret government' angle, but the film cuts them off before anyone gets anywhere near an explanation.
Bryan’s route to Raccoon City General Hospital is practically a checklist of zombie apocalypse clichés: a garage swarming with undead, a lift that’s on its last cables, and one particularly distressing scene in the maternity ward. All for science, apparently. When he finally staggers in, Raccoon’s finest lab coats get to work on the sample straight away.
Bryan’s sample is the last hope to develop a cure for the t-Virus ravaging the city—the scientists waste no time before beginning the synthesis process.
Bryan’s Fate and the Cliffhanger
So, does Bryan survive the ordeal? Not exactly. He took a nasty bite from a zombie girl in the tunnels earlier, and the film does not let him off lightly. By the time the boffins are monkeying about with the cure, Bryan’s arm’s already started changing – no mistaking that for an allergic reaction. On cue, tentacles shoot out of him and attack the scientists, and he’s soon mutated into something that’ll give William Birkin a run for his money, if you remember the Resident Evil 2 boss fights.
As all hell breaks loose, the freshly brewed cure goes tumbling off a sky bridge – no confirmation if it survives the 20-plus storey drop, no one gets to test it, and frankly, that’s your lot. Humanity’s survival is cut off mid-sentence.
Sequel Prospects? Anyone’s Guess
The director, Zach Cregger, has openly admitted he fancies carrying on with the story, telling The Playlist, he “can’t help thinking about other places this story could go.” Typical, really – big tease, but there’s no official sequel on the cards, nor does the film bother with any post-credits antics to dangle future hints. For now, no name you’d recognise from the original games, a main character who’s gone full monster, and the fate of the cure unclear. Fair to say, the door’s not so much left open as hanging off its hinges.
