Game on: after Steven Spielberg’s 2018 blockbuster, Ready Player One is getting a fresh adaptation — and it’s not the one fans expect.

Alright, so here’s a curveball from the universe of Ready Player One. If, like me, you assumed the obvious next step after Spielberg’s 2018 blockbuster would be another full-blown movie, well, surprise: we’re getting something else entirely. And it’s actually kind of cool.

From Pop Culture Easter Eggs to Comic Panels

Let’s back up. Ernest Cline’s novel Ready Player One landed in 2011 and immediately hooked anyone with even a passing fondness for ‘80s pop culture — not to mention gamers and sci-fi fans. Spielberg jumped in with his big-screen adaptation in 2018, wrangling up a cast that included Mark Rylance as the eccentric billionaire, Simon Pegg, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, and Ben Mendelsohn chewing scenery as the villain. The film didn’t just nod to nostalgia, it practically shot fireworks out of its ears: this thing was IP-on-IP-on-IP, the kind of licensing bonanza that only Spielberg could pull off. It worked, too — $607 million at the box office globally. Fans (and Warner Bros., no doubt) figured a sequel was just a matter of time since Cline dropped Ready Player Two a few years later, but, so far, the OASIS has been pretty quiet on that front.

What We’re Actually Getting: Ready Player One Goes Graphic (Novel, That Is)

This week, news dropped that Ready Player One is getting a fresh adaptation — but not the way audiences probably expected. Nope, instead of another movie, Cline’s original book is being turned into a graphic novel. (Honestly, kind of makes sense. Fast-paced action, wild visuals, tons of world-building ... it practically screams for comic treatment.)

The project is called Ready Player One: The Graphic Novel, and it’s being adapted by writer Scott Peterson — he’s worked on Batman: Gotham Adventures comics — with the art handled by Meredith Laxton, who brought The Old Willis Place to life. The publisher is Ten Speed Graphic, who just showed off a few sample pages on Instagram. There’s also an exclusive cover for Target (yes, physical media still exists!), while the standard trade cover is different.

A Word from Ernest Cline Himself

"It’s been an absolute joy working with the team at Ten Speed Graphic, and I couldn’t be more excited to see Ready Player One take on a whole new life as a graphic novel. From the very beginning, this story has been the thrill of stepping into another world, and Meredith Laxton’s stunning artwork adds a whole new dimension to the adventure. This adaptation captures the heart, humor, and high-stakes fun of Wade’s journey in ways that even longtime fans will find surprising. I also think it will allow new readers to experience the magic of Ready Player One for the first time. I can’t wait for fans — both new and old — to see the world of OASIS come alive in a bold new way."

So yes, Cline is all-in on the project. He’s especially bullish on the artwork and on the idea that both returning superfans and total newcomers will find something new to love when the OASIS goes fully illustrated.

How and When You Can Get Your Hands on It

  • Target Exclusive Hardcover: Drops first, landing on U.S. shelves October 6, 2026.
  • Standard Trade & Deluxe Hardcovers: Both versions release everywhere else on March 2, 2027.
  • Every edition — yes, even the standard — is listed at $35.

So if you’re counting the days, well, better start a calendar: you’ve got a bit of a wait. Still, this is a fun revival no matter how you slice it.

What About the Movie Sequel?

Now, if you’re one of those folks who’s been waiting for a Ready Player Two movie, I get it. Spielberg has said that a sequel is 'in development' and would follow the plot of Cline’s second novel. But here’s the catch: Spielberg’s not directing this one. He’s planning to stick around as a producer, but so far, there’s not even a hint of when it’ll hit theaters. No cast confirmations or release dates — and, honestly, Hollywood 'in development' means almost nothing until the lights go down and the credits roll.

Tye Sheridan, who played Wade Watts in the first film, is definitely game to return. As he put it, 'I have my fingers crossed and, of course, I think it’s great and I loved working on that film, so yeah, I hope, I hope we get to do another.'

The Short Version

If you miss the OASIS, you’ll have to revisit it on the page (well, in panels) before you see it on the big screen again. But with a creative team like this, the new Ready Player One: The Graphic Novel might scratch the nostalgia itch while you wait for that elusive movie sequel. File it under 'unexpected, but actually pretty promising.'
