Quentin Tarantino’s final film just got a major filming update

If you’ve been following Quentin Tarantino’s career (and let’s be honest, who hasn’t?), you’ll know he’s always said he’s calling it quits after ten films. Well, we’re still waiting for number ten – but now there’s actually a bit of news about when it might start coming together, at least according to his long-time collaborator on the other side of the camera.

Tarantino’s Final Movie: Still a Mystery, But There’s Movement

So, Robert Richardson – the bloke who’s shot every Tarantino film since Kill Bill: Volume 1 – sat down with Deadline recently and let slip a few details. First off: he doesn’t know what the film’s even going to be about, and apparently neither does anyone else.

Here’s how Richardson put it when asked whether he’s in the loop:

'No, nobody knows what he’s going to do. We know that he’s going to finish [his play], so he’s not going to shoot till after that. So, there’s a possibility sometime next summer. I have no idea what it is, but he won’t be walking down the same path he’s currently walking. I don’t know what he’ll do.'

So, in plain English: Tarantino’s got a play on the go, and nothing in the world of film is kicking off until that’s out the way. But assuming everything goes to plan, the cameras could be rolling next summer. The only detail we can say for sure? It won’t be anything he’s currently been working on.

The Movie Critic: Ditched

For a while, the story was that Tarantino’s swan song would be a film called The Movie Critic. That whole project, for those keeping score, has now been abandoned. Richardson was attached to shoot it, but as he explained, the whole thing just fell apart after Tarantino had one of his famous changes of heart:

'He called me and said, "I’m going to change the script. It’s going to be another script." And then he started prepping that film, and it got out of whack, and it went away.'

Typical Tarantino, really – just when people start getting excited, he bins the whole idea and moves on. If you’re wondering what’s happened to the last vestiges of that project, don’t bother. It’s not happening.

Meanwhile: Tarantino and Kylie Minogue?

This is a weird one. Tarantino’s next project is apparently some sort of collaboration with Kylie Minogue, though he won’t actually be directing it. Genuinely not clear what that’s about or whether it’s music, acting, or something else entirely, but for those looking forward to his final directorial effort, this isn’t it.

So there you go: Tarantino’s elusive tenth and final film remains a total enigma, except that it’s probably not arriving before next summer and nobody, not even his closest collaborators, seems to know what on earth to expect.
