Psycho Killer is stalking your screen soon, with Georgina Campbell front and center and a script by Andrew Kevin Walker. Keep your watchlists ready as this thriller slashes its way to a digital release.

Well, here’s a case study in “curious projects that took forever and then kind of fizzled": the horror thriller Psycho Killer is finally here (sort of), and after a rocky theatrical start, it’s hoping to get some new life digitally. If this one slipped under your radar, don't worry – you’re not alone.

Development Hell: The Long Road to Release

Psycho Killer spent literally over a decade stuck in development. The film started making noise way back in 2009, with – get this – Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit attached to direct. That’s not a typo. That didn’t last long. By the end of 2010, Eli Roth was in the mix (just producing, not directing) alongside his horror-producing buddy Eric Newman (The Last Exorcism). That also fell through.

Producer Gavin Polone, known for Zombieland and Andrew Kevin Walker’s 8MM, signed on while Roth and Newman were circling. But the project ended up stuck for years, and even a 2007 draft of the script leaked online as interest faded and people forgot about it. (If you’ve actually been anticipating Psycho Killer since then, hats off – that’s some true genre commitment.)

The Talent (and Confusion) Behind the Movie

  • Writer: Andrew Kevin Walker (who also wrote Se7en, so the pedigree is at least intriguing)
  • Director/Producer: Gavin Polone
  • Leads: Georgina Campbell (Barbarian), Logan Miller (Escape Room)
  • The Killer: James Preston Rogers – yes, a 6’5" former pro wrestler
  • Backing: New Regency produced, with Roy Lee, Walker himself, Miri Yoon, and Matt Berenson; Constantin Film kicked in some cash too

The Plot (and Some Reporting Headaches)

Here’s the gist:
Georgina Campbell plays Jane Thorne, a cop on a crusade against a serial killer the TV news is calling the 'Satanic Slasher.' The killer just murdered her state trooper husband, so there’s a revenge angle. Here’s where things get tangled: Logan Miller is reportedly playing Marvin, an oddball goth working for a reclusive figure named Pendleton (who… exists, but even the industry press didn’t seem to know who that was). There was enough confusion that, depending on the source, Miller might have even been the husband. Honestly, it’s the kind of mix-up you only see with movies that sat on the shelf for years.

The Release: Not Exactly a Box Office Darling

Psycho Killer finally hit theaters at the end of February…and almost nobody noticed. We're talking about a box office haul of around $2.5 million, which is pretty unimpressive (unless you're making a student film). Critics weren’t particularly kind, either. For example, JoBlo’s Tyler Nichols flat out called it ‘laughably bad.’

Now the film is headed for premium digital rental and sale on April 7. (That’s next Tuesday, if you’re keeping score.)

So... Should You Watch?

Here’s what makes all this interesting to me: Andrew Kevin Walker wrote Se7en, Polone’s produced some sharp movies, and the entire production history is full of head-scratching left-turns. If you thrive on weird movie curios, you might have to check this out just for the “what happened here?" factor. I missed the theatrical run, so I’ll probably give in and see what digital offers.

As for whether it’s any good? Well, here’s that quote I promised:

'Laughably bad.'

Sometimes that’s a warning. Sometimes, that’s a recommendation – it really depends on your taste in horror debacles.
