Place your bets: reportedly just three names left on the next James Bond shortlist

Another day, another swirl of James Bond casting rumours—always good for a midweek distraction. Today, we've got something a bit meatier: Knight Edge Media is reporting that the quest for our next 007 has finally been whittled down to a mere three blokes. After months—let's be honest, years—of speculation and a carousel of names, it sounds like there really is a shortlist on the table at last.

The new Bond shortlist is said to consist of Jack O'Connell, Callum Turner, and Jack Lowden.

The Three Finalists

If their sources hold water, the front-runners are Callum Turner (best known from 'Eternity' and 'Masters of the Air'), Jack O'Connell (from 'Sinners' and 'Lady Chatterley's Lover'), and Jack Lowden (who you might've seen in 'Slow Horses' or 'Dunkirk'). It’s worth noting Lowden’s name gets thrown around everywhere Bond is discussed at the moment, which probably says something about industry chatter even if he’s not a lock.

Denis Villeneuve (the chap who gave us 'Dune') is attached as director, but there’s a caveat—he'll start after he wraps up work on 'Dune: Part Three'. Scripting duties fall to Steve Knight of 'Peaky Blinders' fame, while producing is in the hands of Amy Pascal and David Heyman. If nothing else, that’s a team who know how to throw their weight around in big-budget blockbuster land.

Bond’s Never-Ending Rumour Mill

Let’s not kid ourselves: the Bond rumour machine never, ever sleeps. Several actors have done the rounds in the bookies’ odds over the last eighteen months, with basically every young (and not-so-young) British and Irish actor being whispered about: from Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland to Harris Dickinson, Damson Idris, even Aaron Pierre for good measure. But this latest report narrows the field to just three, so at last you can focus your pub debates a bit.

Still, the pressure isn’t just on the cast. With Amazon now holding the reins, fans and execs alike are watching with impatience. There’s a general sense that if we’re still reading these same Bond rumours in 2027, someone at Amazon will be getting a very firm email from up high.

With the Bond franchise’s future resting on this decision, Amazon needs to get the casting right or risk damaging faith in the next era of 007.
