Pixar Taps Bad Bunny for Toy Story 5 in a Role Fans Won’t See Coming
Bad Bunny is heading to the toy box, joining Toy Story 5 as the voice of a quirky new character. Pixar revealed the surprise this week, teasing an early peek at one of the sequel’s fresh recruits and adding even more star power to the franchise.
If you thought Pixar had done pretty much everything they could with talking toys, think again—the next Toy Story sequel just got a bit weirder. And, to my surprise, the studio is bringing in a familiar face from the music world for a brand new character that’s frankly as odd as it sounds.
Bad Bunny Steps In (Yes, Seriously)
Bad Bunny, yes, that Bad Bunny—the chart-topping Puerto Rican rapper and singer—has landed a role in Toy Story 5. But don’t get any big ideas about a heroic action figure or a wisecracking villain: he’s voicing 'Pizza with Sunglasses' (or ‘Pizza con Gafas’ if you’re feeling international). I did warn you about it being odd.
The reveal came straight from Pixar’s own Instagram, where they dropped: '¡Vamos! @badbunnypr is Pizza with Sunglasses in #ToyStory5.' Honestly, you’d half expect a stunt like this for Toy Story 10, not the proper sequel, but here we are. Pizza with Sunglasses is basically a cool and mysterious slice of pizza, banished along with some other random forgotten toys in an old, abandoned shed. The less you overthink it, the more fun it sounds.
Why Bad Bunny?
Here’s the thing: Bad Bunny’s actually a bit of a Toy Story superfan. During all those lockdowns, he posted clips mucking about with Woody and Rex figures, clearly living his best Toy Story life. No idea if he was already manifesting a Pixar gig, but if so, it paid off. And for the trivia hounds—this is his first major stint as a voice in an animated blockbuster.
In case you’ve somehow avoided Bad Bunny mania, he’s been tearing up the charts with hits like 'Tití Me Preguntó,' 'Moscow Mule,' and the Grammy-winning 'Debí Tirar Más Fotos.' Now he can add 'cool pizza with shades' to his CV.
Where Are Woody and Buzz in All This?
Toy Story 5 will pick up after the (surprisingly emotional) ending of Toy Story 4—where Woody rode off with Bo Peep, leaving the rest with Bonnie. In this one, the toys are up against a decidedly modern threat: children swapping physical playtime for electronics. Specifically, they’re up against a smart tablet with the on-the-nose name 'Lilypad.' Yes, we’re doing the screen-time generation storyline now.
By all accounts, Woody and Buzz will finally reunite to try and keep their connection with Bonnie and save the toys from full-on digital irrelevance.
Everything Else You Need to Know
- Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are expected back as Woody and Buzz.
- The franchise is still top of the Pixar food chain—Toy Story 1 sits at a pitch-perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the sequels have all been critically adored.
- Toy Story 5 is in cinemas 19 June.
Pixar clearly isn’t done finding ways to bring in fresh (and very unexpected) cast members for their biggest series. This time it’s a pizza voiced by Bad Bunny, and honestly, with this franchise, it just about works.
