Lost and Ant-Man’s Evangeline Lilly stepped away from Hollywood in 2020 — and she’s naming the part she couldn’t stomach, along with what life looks like now.

Right, so Evangeline Lilly has finally come clean about why she vanished from screens, and it goes a bit deeper than the usual 'time with family' answer you get from most Hollywood types. Known for Lost, those Ant-Man films and a stint in The Hobbit, Lilly sat down with CBN News and, for once, the candour knob was dialled all the way up.

It's been six years, so it's been a long time of adjusting and discovering what the consequences of it would be.

She actually stepped away from Hollywood back in 2020, but unless you've been poring over her Instagram, it probably slipped under your radar until 2024 when she spelled it out in a retrospective post. According to Lilly, the break was both freeing and, in her words, 'moments of fear' kept cropping up — it's not exactly easy binning off power, influence, and let's be honest, a fair chunk of cash.

Too Much Fame, Not Enough Substance

The funny thing is, Lilly always found fame itself a bit of a millstone. She told it straight: being adored by the world feels great at first ('We love you, you're amazing,' as she put it), but getting away from the attention took real conviction. Apparently, she never particularly wanted it — for her, that side of things was just the 'cost' of the wealth actors can rake in. And she was genuinely sick of it.

Before she ended up acting, Lilly studied political science and international relations, which, perhaps inevitably, left her searching for a more tangible impact than Hollywood stardom was ever going to provide. She's clocked over two decades doing hands-on humanitarian work in Rwanda — not exactly your standard celebrity sideline — and is now more interested in writing her own stories than reciting someone else's in front of a camera.

I've always hated being famous. I've always said being famous is the cost of the wealth that you can get as an actor.

Health Issues Off the Back of Stress

The Hollywood rat race also left its mark health-wise. By the time she called it quits, she was facing what she described as 'massive chronic health issues', which she reckons were down to the relentless stress and public scrutiny that comes with being in the spotlight. On top of this, she suffered a particularly nasty blow to the head after fainting in Hawaii — which was no small event, since almost every area of her brain ended up functioning below par afterwards.

Retired since 2020, Lilly's hiatus from acting only surfaced publicly in 2024.

These days, Lilly says she's leaning heavily on her faith and is firmly convinced there's a bigger plan at work beyond the red carpets and press tours. For someone who never looked entirely comfortable with Hollywood's circus, the quiet life seems to suit her just fine.
