Only Murders in the Building season 6 welcomes another Doctor Who legend

Only Murders in the Building is clearly not mucking about this time – season six is officially shaping up like it wants to break a record for "most British icons per square foot". Already known for stacking its guest star list with big names, the show is upping the ante: the trio are swapping New York for London, and they seem to have invited half the cast of Doctor Who along for the ride.

Series six moves the action to London and piles on Doctor Who royalty — David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, and now Peter Capaldi — in what's quickly turning into a reunion tour of the TARDIS.

If you need a refresher: Only Murders in the Building follows three neighbours—Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez)—who get themselves wrapped up in murder mysteries at their posh Manhattan block, the Arconia, all while documenting their findings on a true-crime podcast. It's delightfully self-aware, with a habit of roping in some genuinely impressive cameos every series (Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep—the works).

The British Invasion

Season six is making a big move: for the first time, the leads are heading beyond New York, which means a completely new setting—and a fresh batch of guest talent, mainly plucked from the UK. Here's the line-up so far:

• David Tennant – Doctor Who's Tenth and Fourteenth Doctors
• Jodie Whittaker – played the Thirteenth Doctor
• Derek Jacobi – Doctor Who guest star
• Nicola Coughlan – recognisable from Derry Girls and Bridgerton, also appeared in Doctor Who
• Jim Broadbent – had a comic turn as the Doctor in a Stephen Moffat-penned parody for Comic Relief
• And the latest addition: Peter Capaldi — the Twelfth Doctor, Malcolm Tucker, and weirdly, also an Oscar winner (Best Live Action Short, 1995 for his Kafka film, in case you ever need a pub quiz answer)

Between them, that's basically a Doctor Who convention minus the merchandising stalls. If they line up Matt Smith next, you'll have a straight run of Doctors 10 through 14, which would probably cause some sort of time paradox.

What We Know (and Don’t)

No details yet on who Capaldi is actually playing. With filming happening in London right now, they're holding plot and character info tightly—as per usual. There's no confirmation if any two Doctors will actually share scenes or if the producers will sneak any cheeky Who gags (no word yet on scarf length or Jelly Babies).

Peter Capaldi's joining brings the tally to five Doctor Who alumni in one season.

The show’s release date hasn’t been revealed, but unless something truly goes off the rails behind the scenes, it’s almost guaranteed to drop sometime this year. That’s been their pattern. While the Arconia may be left behind, it’s clear the team behind the show are sticking to their habit of collecting an alarming number of very recognisable faces wherever they go.
