Netflix is adapting a Sega game nobody has played yet — Stranger Than Heaven is not out until January 2027

Netflix has decided it hasn’t had enough video game adaptations yet, so it’s doubling down with Sega. Off the back of animated hits like Castlevania and Devil May Cry, we’re now looking at a live-action film based on a game that, get this, hasn’t actually come out yet.

Stranger Than Heaven will launch for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on 15 January 2027.

The game in question? Stranger Than Heaven, which is the latest blockbuster from RGG Studio. It’s turning up in stores in 2027, and Netflix is already all-in, prepping a live-action version as part of its multi-million pound tie-in with Sega. This particular project is part of a bigger push: Netflix is grabbing Sega properties left and right, throwing money at all sorts—some nostalgic, some quite out of left field.

Sega’s Adaptation Spree

Right, so here’s what Netflix and Sega are cooking up together:

• Stranger Than Heaven (live-action)—the centrepiece, based on a moody new game set in early 20th-century Japan, following Makoto Daito as he gets himself tangled up in the rise of the Tojo Clan (if you’re a Like a Dragon fan, you’ll know how that goes). Sega’s head of film, Toru Nakahara, is overseeing the whole thing (including this adaptation).
• A Crazy Taxi movie, also at Netflix. This one’s come with more names attached than usual—Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (those guys off The Naked Gun) are scripting it, with Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher (Original Film, so expect it to try and look big budget) producing alongside Nakahara. If you never played it: you’re a cabbie, picking up fares in a city that runs on caffeine and total chaos.
• A brand new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series, with Carlos Stevens developing it alongside Sega’s Nakahara again. Still no real info on what that’ll look like, but it’s happening as part of the same deal.

The People Pulling Strings

Sega seems to have their execs working overtime on film deals. Nakahara is coordinating these adaptations on Sega’s behalf, while Shuji Utsumi (Sega’s president and COO) is out here giving statements to put a bit of polish on the news. Here’s how he summed up the vibe from Sega’s side about the collaboration with Netflix:

‘We’ve watched Netflix take on stories across every kind of format and treat each one with real craft, and seeing that same dedication applied to Sonic, Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven is something we at Sega are incredibly proud to be a part of.’
