Mutiny lost 64% of its audience in a week, and Jason Statham's 2026 keeps getting worse

It's been a tough stretch at the box office lately if your name's Jason Statham. His latest action flick, Mutiny, is limping through cinemas and, judging by the numbers, not exactly causing a stampede at the ticket counters.

Mutiny has managed just $13.23 million in North America after two weekends in cinemas.

Second Weekend Slide

Right, so Mutiny kicked off in US cinemas on 21 August 2026—not really a prime slot, but it is what it is—pulling in $7.71 million from a decent spread across 2,703 screens. Not a disaster for an action film, but hardly barnstorming stuff for a bloke of Statham's calibre.

The trouble is, matters only got worse over that second weekend. The film scraped up just $2.75 million between the 28th and 30th August, marking a rather painful 64.3% drop compared to its opening. By the end of round two, the domestic total sat at $13.23 million, good enough for ninth place that weekend—well out of sight of the podium.

Worldwide Woes and the Streaming Blunder

If you're wondering about international numbers, there's not much cheer there either. Overseas territories have barely coughed up $6.60 million, so all told, Mutiny has rung up a global gross of $19.83 million. Not especially brilliant given the reported production budget is sitting at $40 million. At this rate, Lionsgate would probably have been better off putting the cash on a decent accumulator at the bookies.

Things got even messier thanks to a streaming cock-up. Somehow, someone at Amazon managed to let the film slip onto Prime Video for a few hours before it was yanked back down. It didn't take long for pirates to pounce, pinching the film and making it freely available online, especially outside the US—and that, predictably, did the box office no favours abroad.

Critics, Crowds, and Statham's 2026 Record

• Critics have been, let's say, underwhelmed: 49% on Rotten Tomatoes from 122 reviews.
• The punters seem much happier, handing it a robust 86% audience score on the same site. Apparently, Statham still delivers for the Friday night crowd if not for the critics.

All this, by the way, comes hard on the heels of another flop for Statham this year—Shelter, which limped into cinemas back in January. Mind you, Shelter still managed to claw out $54 million worldwide (with $12.8 million from US audiences and a more respectable $41.7 million overseas). Compared to Mutiny, that actually looks rather good now—though neither film is sending the accountants running for Champagne.
