Minecraft movie 2 levels up as director teases a bigger, funnier sequel
Fresh off one of 2025’s biggest box-office runs, director Jared Hess says Minecraft Movie 2 is in the works and aiming to level up with bigger scope and bigger laughs, teasing the sequel in a late-May interview.
Well, here we go again: the unstoppable juggernaut that is Minecraft at the box office now has its sequel in the works – and the director’s already dropping details. You sort of knew this was coming after the first film hoovered up cash, but we’ve got a few new nuggets that might even get the hardcore fans raising eyebrows.
The First Film: Absolutely Massive
In case you missed it (or were living under a cobblestone), A Minecraft Movie has basically torched its competition at cinemas worldwide. It’s managed to rake in over $960 million across the globe, landing as the fifth highest-grossing film for 2025. Honestly, considering how rabid the Minecraft fanbase is, maybe that’s not much of a surprise, but those numbers do put it up there with the blockbusters.
What’s Happening With the Sequel?
Director Jared Hess has now confirmed he’s already four weeks into working up the follow-up, titled A Minecraft Movie Squared. If you’re expecting a small, safe sequel, sorry to disappoint – Hess says this one’s going to be 'more ambitious'. His words:
'We’re bouncing all over the place to so many really, really unique locations. It’s bigger, it’s crazier, it’s funnier.'
That’s setting expectations pretty high, but given how bonkers the Minecraft universe can get, I’m curious (and slightly concerned) to see how far they push it without losing all sense of plot. To add to it, he confirmed what fans have been speculating: the movie’s world is expanding in a big way. The core players, Steve and Alex, are heading out on another epic journey through the Overworld, with new gear and tricks up their sleeves to tackle what’s next.
New (And Returning) Cast Bits
So, who’s actually in this? Well, we’ve got a bit of a shake-up and some old faces:
- Kirsten Dunst joins as Alex, the famed female avatar from the game. She was cast as of March 2026 – and that is going to be talked about, trust me.
- The original crew returns: Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and others are back for another round of blocky adventures. The focus is firmly on Steve (presumably Momoa), Alex (now Dunst), and everyone’s favourite new addition, Garrett 'The Garbage Man' (don’t ask me, your guess is as good as mine).
Kayleen Walters, who’s executive director, really put her foot down regarding Alex’s importance: 'Alex is such an important character in the Minecraft world that we want to make sure she’s represented in the movie and she has a great part.' Minecraft lore purists will be relieved, I suppose.
What to Expect: Bigger, Wilder, Funnier
Everything points to this sequel not just upping the ante but launching it into orbit. Hess has been clear that we’re getting more madcap, more locations, and a much bigger scope. Sounds exhausting, but at least it won’t be dull.
The main trio – Steve, Alex, and Garrett – will apparently be plumbing the Overworld’s more mysterious and previously unexplored bits, charging into challenges that weren’t even hinted at the first time around. If you thought they’d already squeezed everything out of the Minecraft universe, seems like you were wrong.
