Millie Bobby Brown Reflects on Eleven’s Bittersweet Farewell
Millie Bobby Brown shares her thoughts on Eleven’s fate in Stranger Things, calling the ending both moving and satisfying, while also revealing her fondness for Mike’s imagined outcome.
As the dust settles on the much-discussed conclusion of Stranger Things’ fifth series, not everyone is entirely pleased with how things wrapped up. Yet, for Millie Bobby Brown, who’s spent years in the shoes of Eleven, the final moments seem to have struck the right note. Her character’s decision to remain behind as Hopper’s explosive device obliterates the Upside Down—and everything within it—has left viewers divided. Eleven’s fate, sealed in the chaos, is anything but straightforward.
Brown, speaking candidly in an interview, described the choice as something she’d long hoped for.
“So beautiful and cathartic,”
she called it, adding that it was a resolution she’d wanted for quite some time. The sacrifice, in her view, was not just about closing a chapter, but ensuring that no one—neither Dr. Kay nor any other would-be villain—could ever exploit her abilities again.
“I just think it’s incredibly important that it all ends for her, and the suffering and the pain end,”
Brown explained, hinting at a sense of relief for her character after years of turmoil.
Alternative Endings and Mike’s Hopeful Tale
Yet, the story doesn’t quite end there. In the series’ epilogue, Mike Wheeler, Eleven’s steadfast companion, refuses to accept the official version of events. Instead, he spins a different yarn for his friends, suggesting that Kali conjured an illusion of Eleven at the gate, while the real El slipped away unnoticed. In Mike’s mind, she’s alive and well, living quietly in Iceland and visiting the waterfalls they once dreamed of seeing together. Brown admitted a certain fondness for this take, remarking,
“I kinda love that ending, that there is just such a bigger purpose to Kali’s powers.”
This alternative narrative offers a glimmer of hope, a what-if that lingers long after the credits roll. It’s a version that appeals to those unwilling to let go, and perhaps, to Brown herself, who seems to appreciate the ambiguity it brings.
Ambiguity and Cast Perspectives
The question of whether Eleven truly survived remains deliberately unresolved. The Duffer brothers, creators of the series, have openly stated that her fate is meant to be ambiguous, leaving the audience to draw their own conclusions. Only they and Brown, it seems, know the real answer. Meanwhile, Sadie Sink, who plays Max, has her own take. During a chat on a late-night talk show, she didn’t mince words:
“I think she’s dead… I think, like, Mike’s story is just one last story.”
With the entire saga now available to stream, fans are left to debate, theorise, and revisit the final chapter as often as they like. Whether you’re drawn to the official ending or prefer Mike’s hopeful version, there’s plenty to ponder in the aftermath of Hawkins’ last stand.
