Mike Flanagan's Carrie drops all eight episodes on 7 October, and King had to be talked into it

Here we go again with Stephen King’s infamous bloodbath — yes, you guessed it, Carrie is making a fresh appearance soon, only this time she’s heading to Prime Video as a new series. If you thought the 1976 Brian De Palma film was the only version you needed, apparently not — there’s a whole new take, and it’s from horror serial specialist Mike Flanagan (the bloke behind The Haunting of Hill House).

Carrie lands on Prime Video 7 October, with all eight episodes dropping at once.

The Flanagan Approach

Let’s be honest, after the De Palma film and a couple of (mostly forgettable) attempts to retell Carrie’s tale, you’d think even King himself might be wary of another go-round. And you’d be right — apparently, King needed a bit of convincing before getting on board with this Prime Video series. Flanagan admitted he had to come to King with more than just ‘Hey, let’s do Carrie again’, especially since this is the book that started King’s career in blood and telekinesis.

The official teaser, which landed on YouTube in July, kept it moody and vague: 'She just wanted a friend. They gave her a fight.' Pretty much sums up every version of the story, but Flanagan reckons he’s going further. He spoke quite openly about pitching himself to King at San Diego Comic-Con, making it clear he wouldn’t even bother trying if he didn’t have a genuinely new angle.

Here’s Flanagan explaining his pitch directly to King:

I kind of feel like that’s the question everyone has: 'Why do Carrie again? And why do it like this?' I’m not going to Stephen King without an amazing answer to that question, because it was also the first question that Steve had when I said, ‘I think this could be amazing.’

What got King interested, it seems, was Flanagan’s plan to 'take [the story] apart into its essential pieces and use that to build something new' — not just a 1:1 remake of what came before. In fact, King isn’t just giving a nod from afar; he’s listed as an executive producer this time, so presumably he’s got some say in how things unfold.

What’s Actually New?

To answer the inevitable 'Why even bother?' — Flanagan’s said he wants to make it eight episodes of something properly satisfying, both for hardcore fans and for King himself. When pressed about future seasons or the possibility of stretching it into an anthology, Flanagan kept his cards close. According to interviews, he’s not fussed about what Prime Video might want to do later — his focus is just knuckling down and making sure this first outing does the job.
