Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice ’85 has just recruited a fan-favourite Superman alum, cranking up the star power alongside Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler.

Universal isn't messing about with Miami Vice '85. The new film adaptation of the classic TV series already had a pretty glitzy cast, but now it's pulled in Edi Gathegi—fresh off winning everyone over as Mr. Terrific in last year's Superman film. Gathegi joining the competition is a bit of a statement: the studio seems to have fairly bold ambitions for this reboot, on top of loading it with superhero alumni and bankable names.

Cast Grows, Ambitions Rise

So, who's running this flashy nostalgia machine? Joseph Kosinski, the bloke behind Top Gun: Maverick (and the upcoming F1 movie), is in the director's chair. Production is scheduled to kick off in November across New York and Miami, with the whole thing being shot for IMAX. They’re clearly not aiming small.

As for the cast, it's turning into a proper who's who:

  • Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs (the role Philip Michael Thomas played in the original TV series)
  • Austin Butler as James Crockett (taking over from Don Johnson's iconic pastel blazer)
  • Alden Ehrenreich
  • Whitney Peak
  • Camila Morrone
  • Danny Ramirez
  • John Leguizamo
  • Andrew Schulz
  • And now, Edi Gathegi – reportedly playing a particularly ambitious criminal
Miami Vice '85 lands in cinemas on 19 May 2028.

Much like the original show, this film heads back to the wild, chaotic heart of 1980s Miami and reworks the classic pilot episode. That means dangerous undercover assignments, dodgy deals, neon, boats, and presumably more pastel than is medically advisable.

Gathegi's Star On The Rise

Gathegi joining is more than a trivia footnote. After standing out in James Gunn's Superman reboot (the one that surprised us all), he’s confirmed to be returning as Mr. Terrific in the planned 2027 sequel, Man of Tomorrow. His CV’s in rude health at the moment too – previous gigs include The Harder They Fall (with Idris Elba and Regina King), X-Men: First Class, and, yes, he did his time in the Twilight universe. If you're more into telly lately, you'll find him as a regular on Apple TV+’s For All Mankind.
