Melissa Gilbert is leaving When Calls the Heart before season 14 — here’s the real reason
Hope Valley is saying goodbye. Melissa Gilbert is out of When Calls the Heart, confirming she won’t return for Season 14 after a two-season run as Georgie McGill, dashing hopes for a comeback.
Well, it’s official – Melissa Gilbert won’t be turning up in Hope Valley again. If you’re a fan of 'When Calls the Heart' and you were quietly holding out to see more of Georgie McGill next season, I’m afraid that ship’s sailed.
Gilbert Out for Season 14 – But Not by Choice
In classic style, Gilbert confirmed it all herself on Instagram, where she finally responded to the endless questions she’s been getting about her potential return for season 14. The answer? A pretty resounding 'no.' She didn’t just leave it at that, though. Apparently, she was told the decision was down to 'budget issues.' So, not her call at all, but rather a bit of a numbers game at Hallmark HQ.
Still, she took it on the chin and wished everyone involved with the show a 'wonderful and successful season 14,' which is unbelievably gracious given the circumstances.
Reflecting on Her Stint – And What Comes Next
Despite being written out, Gilbert seemed pretty positive about her time on the series. She publicly thanked executive producer Michael Landon Jr. for giving her a shot at the role of Georgie McGill, describing the experience as 'a joy' to play over the past couple of seasons. Then she wrapped up her farewell with this little nugget:
'When one door closes, another one opens.'
That’s about as hopeful as you get for someone whose character’s just been dropped due to budgeting.
What the Network Had to Say
Hallmark didn’t leave it dangling in the wind, either. They confirmed that Georgie McGill’s storyline was always meant to wrap during season 13. In a statement, they said they were grateful to work with Gilbert and praised her for her work – though, of course, they didn’t elaborate much beyond the standard platitudes.
For anyone keeping track, Gilbert first turned up in 'When Calls the Heart' during season 12 and kept popping back for guest appearances throughout season 13.
Melissa Gilbert: Not Exactly New To TV Drama
Just in case you need a quick refresher: long before Hope Valley was even a thing, Melissa Gilbert was proper TV royalty. She’s best known for playing Laura Ingalls Wilder across nearly a decade on 'Little House on the Prairie,' from 1974 until 1983 – not a bad run by any standard. Over the years, Gilbert’s picked up her fair share of gongs too, including several Young Artist Awards, a TV Land Award, and even her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
