Mark Wahlberg and Riz Ahmed Face Off in Netflix’s ‘The Big Fix’
Mark Wahlberg and Riz Ahmed join forces in a gripping Netflix thriller, helmed by Baltasar Kormákur, delving into the murky world of global football match-fixing and organised crime.
Mark Wahlberg, never one to shy away from a demanding role, is gearing up for another high-stakes adventure. This time, he’s set to headline ‘The Big Fix’, a crime thriller for Netflix, with Riz Ahmed sharing the spotlight. The project, directed by Baltasar Kormákur and produced in partnership with Chernin Entertainment, is due to start filming later this year, adding yet another title to Wahlberg’s already packed schedule.
The story, inspired by real events, plunges into the shadowy realm of international football corruption. At its core is a sprawling match-fixing operation, orchestrated by criminal syndicates seeking to rake in enormous profits by manipulating the outcome of games. The screenplay, crafted by Guy Bolton and Justin Haythe, places Wahlberg in the shoes of a former Interpol officer, now working within FIFA’s bureaucracy. His routine is upended when he stumbles upon evidence of a global conspiracy, prompting him to embark on a perilous mission to unmask those responsible.
Unravelling a Global Scandal
The official synopsis teases a relentless pursuit:
“The Big Fix follows a former Interpol cop in a bureaucratic role at FIFA who uncovers an international match-fixing scandal and launches a high-stakes mission to stop whoever is behind it. His target: a passionate hustler who joins forces with Chinese Triads to earn millions rigging football games across the world. As they start to circle one another, a high-octane, globetrotting cat-and-mouse thriller ensues — pitting two defiant, determined men against each other.”
Wahlberg’s character, far from content with paperwork, finds himself drawn into a dangerous game of pursuit, with Ahmed’s character—a resourceful fixer entangled with the Chinese Triads—always one step ahead. The narrative promises a tense, globe-trotting chase, with both men locked in a battle of wits and nerve.
Behind the Scenes: Familiar Faces Reunite
Kormákur, who takes the director’s chair, is no stranger to working with Wahlberg. Their collaboration dates back to 2012’s ‘Contraband’, a remake of the Icelandic film ‘Reykjavík-Rotterdam’, and continued with the action-comedy ‘2 Guns’, where Wahlberg starred alongside Denzel Washington. The pair nearly reunited for ‘Arthur the King’, but scheduling conflicts intervened. Now, with ‘The Big Fix’, their creative partnership is back on track, much to the delight of action aficionados.
Production duties are shared between Kormákur, Peter Chernin, and David Ready, with Bennett Walsh and Jenno Topping serving as executive producers. Netflix and Chernin Entertainment, having recently wrapped the survival thriller ‘Apex’ with Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton, were quick to greenlight this new venture, eager to capitalise on the proven chemistry between director and star.
High Expectations and Past Successes
Given the track record of Wahlberg and Kormákur, expectations are running high. Their previous outings have been anything but modest: ‘Contraband’ pulled in $96.3 million globally on a $25 million budget, while ‘2 Guns’ amassed over $130 million against a $61 million spend. With such figures, it’s little wonder that their latest collaboration is already generating buzz among fans of the genre.
‘The Big Fix’ promises a blend of intrigue, action, and international intrigue, with a cast and crew well-versed in delivering box office hits. As production gears up, audiences can look forward to another adrenaline-fuelled ride through the underbelly of the sporting world, where the stakes are as high off the pitch as they are on it.
