If you watched the brand new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday—and let's face it, you'd have to be living under a rock to miss it—you probably clocked the big dust-up: Thor versus Doctor Doom. That should have been the internet-breaking comic book spectacle. Instead, what's sparked chatter isn't the fight itself, but how it looks. Specifically, that it doesn’t look finished.

That trailer drop

Marvel Studios lobbed out the first proper teaser on 20 July, and social media absolutely ran with it. Main talking point? The CGI—bluntly, it's rough around the edges. If you've seen the bit where Thor leaps into frame, you know what I mean. One person on X (still can't bring myself to call it 'X', if I'm honest) flagged the shot, saying it looked off.

Another chimed in, comparing these effects to the ropey moments in Black Widow. For context, this is a film with a reported budget up at Avatar levels, so expectations are through the roof. One viewer summed up the general vibe: 'Something about this feels off but I can't put my finger on what.' Which, to be fair, is a polite way of putting it.

CGI, controversy, and patience

Now, you'd think this sort of criticism would have fans sharpening their pitchforks, but it's not all doom and gloom (pun absolutely intended). Loads of people actually tempered things by pointing out this is fairly routine for a first trailer—unfinished CGI happens all the time.

As one person put it, 'I'm guessing the CGI is just unfinished, they have time.'

Another fan even swung the conversation back to the good stuff: hyping up Shang-Chi joining the latest Avengers roster. Of course, there are always a few who insist we give Marvel the benefit of the doubt.

They're half-expecting a few potato-quality scenes early on, and reckon we won't see those shots in the finished film anyway.

The film drops in cinemas on 18 December 2026, and if history's any guide, I'd expect every digital hammer and magical lightning bolt will look a whole lot sharper by then.
