Erik Sullivan is officially out of the new Malcolm in the Middle — he turned down a major payday and is sticking with retirement.

So, if you thought the Hollywood nostalgia train might finally run out of steam—think again. Hulu is officially bringing back Malcolm in the Middle, and honestly, they seem determined to prove that yes, family dysfunction is a timeless Olympic sport.

The revival, which is officially—and somewhat on-the-nose—titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, is going live on Hulu starting April 10, 2026. Looks like we're right back in it with the Wilkerson clan (still not canonically named in-universe, by the way, but if you know, you know).

The Setup: Reunion Chaos

This batch of episodes (just four, so it's more a mini-season than a full-blown comeback) centers around a big family reunion for Hal and Lois's 40th wedding anniversary. I don't know who thought this group could handle a peaceful family celebration, but apparently the answer is 'they can't.' From the sound of it, the anniversary is just the jumping-off point for all the usual chaos—sibling drama, old wounds, and who knows, maybe the house will survive this time. (I doubt it.)

Where Are They Now: The Cast

  • Frankie Muniz is back as Malcolm, the way-too-smart-for-his-own-good middle kid. (Let’s be honest: How many of us still think in his tired inner monologue?)
  • Bryan Cranston returns as Hal, who we now can only half-unironically picture in tighty-whities thanks to Breaking Bad, but hey, that's crossover appeal.
  • Jane Kaczmarek is back as Lois, still fierce, still intimidating, and somehow still everyone’s favorite TV mom.
  • Christopher Masterson reprises his role as Francis, who apparently still hasn’t learned his lesson from the Alaska ranch years (or anything else, honestly).
  • Justin Berfield will be Reese, the human tornado. You really can’t have a Malcolm revival without a little mayhem, and that's basically his job description.

The Awkward Absence: Where's Dewey?

Now for the elephant in the room: Dewey. Remember the musically-brilliant, weirdly-underestimated younger brother? Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, is out. Completely. If you're wondering why, Jane Kaczmarek let slip to Variety that Sullivan 'is an incredible student' and is now 'studying Dickens.' In her words, the show's team 'offered him buckets of money to come back,' but he gave them a straight-up 'No, thank you.'

That means Sullivan is the only main original cast member sitting this one out. Which is a bit wild, considering he was in every episode of the original run—a streak only matched by Muniz, Cranston, and Masterson.

Hulu and the creative team aren’t ignoring Dewey, though. He’ll still be there, now played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark. The character remains central to the story, but the real Dewey is off leading what sounds like a far more boring—but probably much healthier—life far away from Hollywood glitz. To be fair, Sullivan barely acted past the show's original run (last film credit: 2010’s Twelve, directed by none other than Joel Schumacher), and he's made it clear he's not interested in the fame or the money.

So Why Is This Happening Now?

In case you're wondering, Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair is dropping alongside a whole messy wave of nostalgia projects. If Scrubs season 10 and another Baywatch remake on Hulu weren't enough for you, there's now this reunion to add to the pile.

Final Thoughts

Love it or groan at it, this four-episode miniseries is basically Hulu’s bet that audiences aren’t finished watching the world's most stressful TV family implode on camera. The big question: Is the Wilkerson energy still as nuclear as we remember, or is this just another nostalgia cash grab? We'll find out April 10, 2026.
