Spider-Man: Brand New Day is keeping Sadie Sink’s role a secret — here’s why
In a candid interview, director Destin Daniel Cretton explained the thinking behind keeping Sadie Sink’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day role under wraps.
If you’ve been watching the relentless guessing game around Spider-Man: Brand New Day, you’ll know one thing’s kept Marvel fans up far too late: Sadie Sink’s character is still a complete mystery. The film’s out this summer, and yet Marvel and Sony are keeping lips sealed about who the Stranger Things star is actually playing. Normally, I’d call this the usual secretive schtick, but even by their standards, it’s impressive. Now, director Destin Daniel Cretton has piped up with an actual reason.
The curtain stays down Cretton, chatting to Rolling Stone, basically said the decision to withhold Sink’s character wasn’t to troll fans — or not entirely. He explained that not knowing absolutely everything going in can be for the best.
Some people want every surprise ruined by trailers, but, as he put it, 'If people are gonna get mad, I can’t control that! I wish everything was a secret.'
Basically, if you hate spoilers, Cretton’s your man. He’s one of those types who dodges trailers altogether.
He added another nudge: 'You’ll see when you watch the movie that there’s a very real reason not to tell people who Sadie Sink is playing. And I don’t think you’ll get mad at it. I think you’ll be like, "Oh, I’m glad I didn’t know that."'
Why the fuss? You can’t really blame folks for obsessing. The online theorists have spent months pitching that Sink could be the MCU’s Jean Grey, but in classic fashion, both Marvel and Sony have kept absolutely silent on all those rumours. The rest of the cast and characters? We know. Sadie Sink? Black hole. In case you’re catching up, Brand New Day is the next chapter for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, picking things up from where everyone forgot his identity at the end of No Way Home.
As summer blockbuster secrets go, it’s rare we make it all the way to release with the main new actor’s part still under wraps. So congratulations to Marvel’s marketing department — they’ve managed something genuinely unusual this time. The new Spider-Man film opens 31 July 2026.
