House of the Dragon’s Season 3 finale delivers shocking deaths at the Battle of Tumbleton, plus brutal betrayals and a haunting prophecy priming a devastating final season.

If you thought House of the Dragon was already a bit of a bloodbath, well, the Season 3 finale has just raised the bar. You’re getting major deaths, proper backstabbing, and a moody bit of prophetic tapestry work that could haunt the next season. No one’s safe in Westeros; seems they’re intent on proving it every year.

Who Didn’t Survive the Finale?

The Battle of Tumbleton isn’t just a set-piece – it’s a clear-out. Some names you’ve actually heard of bite it, usually in spectacular fashion. Here’s the rundown:

  • Queen Helaena Targaryen – suicide after weeks as Rhaenyra’s captive
  • Lord Ormund Hightower – stabbed by Ser Roderick Dustin, seconds before both are roasted by Silverwing’s dragonfire
  • The High Septon – executed by Ser Alyn of Hull at Rhaenyra’s command
  • Ser Roderick Dustin – see above: goes out with Hightower, courtesy of Silverwing
  • Kat (Hugh Hammer’s wife) – dies off screen during the general sacking of Tumbleton
Queen Helaena’s tapestry, finished before her death, shows her fall alongside a crowned Rhaenyra, dragons, flames, and desperate hands - a chilling stitched prophecy in the place of her usual cryptic mutterings.

In detail: Ormund and Roderick have a scrap on the battlements. Just as Ormund thinks he’s taken Roderick down, Silverwing torches the pair of them like it’s a barbecue. The High Septon basically signs his own death warrant by refusing to crown Rhaenyra; she orders Alyn to do the honours, which he only goes through with after some visible hesitation. Kat’s demise is off-stage – casualties of war (and script economy, presumably).

Helaena’s Death: Not Just Another Corpse

This one’s a raw deal. Helaena’s been pent up in the Red Keep for weeks, sanity unraveling, guarded, starved, and finally force-fed on Rhaenyra’s orders. Mysaria managed to sneak in some truth: the queen’s never letting her go, and her unborn child’s just a political pawn. With nothing left to hold onto, Helaena makes the high window her exit, leaving behind that haunted tapestry of her own foresight.

Emma D’Arcy hit the point pretty directly at a press do:

‘Her death condemns Rhaenyra to the path she’s chosen. There’s no way back after that’

Still Breathing? Daeron Targaryen’s Fate

Odd one, this – Daeron’s status gets left annoyingly uncertain. After the dragonfire levelled Tumbleton, his brother Gwayne is frantically searching, but the series offers no body, no confirmation. All we know is Daeron’s dragon Tessarion was last seen flying off, dodging Silverwing’s chaos.

Ryan Condal, at a recent press conference, made it clear we’ve not seen the last of the family drama, hinting Aegon’s plan includes finding both brothers again and bringing the fight back to King’s Landing. If you’re already desperate for answers, tough luck: the final season isn’t expected till 2028.

The fourth and concluding season of House of the Dragon is currently aiming for a 2028 premiere.
