Detective Joe Velasco’s comeback on Law & Order: SVU may be just the start, with Octavio Pisano signaling more episodes ahead and hinting a spin-off could be next.

All right, folks, time for a quick catch-up on the latest drama swirling around Law & Order: SVU — specifically, what’s next for Detective Joe Velasco and his alter ego, Octavio Pisano. (Spoiler: the answer is... maybe? That’s about as clear as we get.)

Velasco's Exit... But Maybe Not?

So, if you blinked recently, you might have missed that Pisano left the show as a series regular earlier this season. That was technically his 'exit.' Except he then did what all Law & Order detectives seem to do: popped right back up again, with just enough chaos in tow to keep viewers guessing.

Case in point: the April 9 SVU episode had Velasco back in NYC, thrown into the middle of an investigation about a drug cartel trafficking young women. Because it’s SVU, things went sideways almost immediately — Velasco wound up getting shot (don't worry, he survives) and by the end he’s deep in the existential weeds about his purpose, place, and path forward. In other words: classic 'detective soul-searching' mode.

The Door That Never Quite Closes

Pisano recently chatted with Soaps.com and, not shockingly, he’s still open to future return trips through the revolving Law & Order door:

'I hope so. That door, I hope it’s open.'

He admits the last episode wrapped things up in a pretty 'vague' way for Velasco — so if the writers want him back for SVU Season 28 (yes, that's the number now), he’s game. But don’t start planning your Velasco/Fin spin-off just yet because, to quote Pisano, 'there’s a lot of changes happening, as always, and I’m just excited to see where they’re going.' Translation: nobody’s giving clear answers.

Pisano also took a moment to shout out the SVU writers, producers, and showrunner Michele Fazekas, and — as every actor does while angling for another phone call from the studio — said he’s excited about how this season and the finale pan out. His message, in a nutshell: 'Hopefully they come back [next season], so hopefully I come back.'

And About That Spin-off...

This is where things get a little more interesting. When asked about the rumor mill regarding spin-offs and crossovers in Dick Wolf Land, Pisano didn’t exactly say 'no.' He joked about maybe showing up on Organized Crime (the series he’s cameoed on before), but also pointed out the not-so-minor fact that NBC hasn't actually renewed Organized Crime for another season yet — so that may be a non-starter for now.

But he did drop one final tease for the hardcore fans, saying:

'We’ll see. Listen, the best is yet to come. That’s all I’m gonna say.'

Where Does That Leave Velasco?

  • Octavio Pisano stepped down as a series regular on SVU this year, but has already returned once, with his character’s arc left curiously open-ended.
  • He says he’s open to coming back for more SVU (for those keeping track, next season would be #28), depending on what the producers want.
  • The idea of a Joe Velasco-led spin-off is floating out there, but there’s zero confirmation or specifics; Pisano won't spill beyond vague hints.
  • He’s also game for crossing over to Organized Crime — assuming NBC brings that show back.

So, short version: Sometimes characters exit Law & Order but never really leave, and Octavio Pisano is fully onboard for whatever twist, return, or spin-off the universe throws his way. As always, stay tuned — because with SVU, no door gets closed for good.
